Nothing. We hope to keep as invisible to Americans as possible. Less visibility = less problems

That we try to be like you. More effort goes into not being like the US than anything else.

You mean the school of trained seals who need their nomination papers signed?

Pass a law disallowing party power over nominations and the power of the PM would be largely checked. Then he or she would really have to win the confidence of Parliament.

However, as it is, it is a matter of getting the animals to perform their tasks for the show to go on.

Why do people desire the status quo when we could have much better?

My old MP voted against party lines on a number of important matters. He also voted against party lines when he was an MNA. Why is it that in one of the safest Liberal ridings in the country you still see that sort of independence?

Is there such a thing as native Canadian cuisine? I've heard of something with cheese curds and gravy. What else? And don't go on like the Brits and talk about how great your Indian food is, unless it's a style unique to Canada.

When I was in Winnepeg, a young lady who was showing me her city took me to get a cheeseburger and fries when I asked to have some authentic Canadian food.

If the electorate feels they are being inadequately represented then they should show the independence of mind to vote for better representation.

When was the last time you saw a caucus in Canada, anywhere, fire a PM or Premier the way Maggie got fired?

Your answer should be never, because here we would still be wearing her boot up the ass of all the MPs until she lost an election.

The difference is here we cut the balls off the MPs and only listen to the party leadership reviews.

a) Untrue. Every census sees 10 redistricting commissions. Quebec underwent a redistricting this time around and as you should know it always has 75 seats

Didn't know that.

quote:

b) Provinces gain representation when they increase in size relative to Quebec (which itself has a rising population)

Also news to me. That means I have to refigure my projections.

quote:

c) Representations are grandfathered to a specific date (cannot recall exactly). If Alberta started bleeding population it could lose seats down to a minimum (the amount it had on previously referred to date). Grandfathering does not take place after every census.

Thank Trudeau for this. It happened in 1982.

Explain that to the many MPs who have been expelled for disobedience over the years. Tell me, do we have parties for the purposes of the leaders, or the constituents?

There are votes you can go your own way on, and then there are the votes where the whip tells you you vote yea or you are toast in the party.

btw, Parrish never voted against, only said that she could care less if Martin won another election. The withholding of the signature on the nomination papers was trotted out as she was banished from caucus. IOW, she will run as an independant or not at all.

She was also popular among her constituents, for what it's worth.

Premiers, comrade.

quote:

Depends on the party. The federal NDP and the provincial parties are affiliated. None of the other provincial parties are affiliated with the national parties, and this includes the conservatives and liberals.

quote:

What's the story on your territories?

3 of them, all sparsely populated. 90K people in total.

They have 3 federal seats, and no provincial representation, per se.

Pretty much like the territories the US used to have, before they became states.

? Parties of the same name do not necessarily share the same views. BC provincial liberals does not equal federal liberals. Most provinces are two-party affairs. Ontario is a 3 party show. Alberta is ruled by the iron fist of the conservative party. Political dissent is nonexistent. Free speech is stifled. Minorities are gassed by the thousands. Some of these statements may be exaggerations.

they're all ridiculously far north and have ridiculously few people in them. there are three of them. Inuits form the majority in one of these territories and aren't far off a majority in the other two (IIRC)

They were French Canadians and being on the losing side helps to motivate people to move on down the line.
