Never had ship problems themselves, but this point drove me mad whilst playing.

That is one thing that S3 does quite a bit better. If you want goods shipped to another island, then you have complete control over what goes there and how much.

That and they sometimes tend to crash / get stuck on a particular point of land and never move again. Thats why I build multiple ships.

Hmm, havent seen that yet. All i can say is that in 1602, the only other game i can think of thats comparable in having 'citybuilding' type activities across multiple islands, moving needed supplies from island to island was excruciating - the AI didnt do it, - you either had to control the ship, or set up a standard pattern (ship a goes to island b with tobacco, picks up wood for island c, drops the wood, picks up tobacco, rinse and repeat, etc). Ships were fairly costly to build and support, IIRC, so you never had very many, and the so it was particulalry important to conserve shipping space.

By contrast in settlers2 ships are cheap, and the AI does a decent job of using them, though there are times id like to manual override.

Tired of ads?

Finally finished chapter 4. I sometimes forget im aiming for a gate, and just focus on buildup like its a typical RTS.

To aim for the gate is not always the best way. I always try to split the enemy "nation(s)" into two

Are you enjoying it LotM? How are you finding the graphics, considering its age and all. Is it a a fun game? Or do you prefer the more 'realistic' approach of games like Imperialism? did you get the sound/music working? Oh and one last thing - not sure if it came up, but did you play the first game ever, or it this a new 'settlers' experience for you?

(sorry for maybe coming across like the inquisition! )

The graphics - I can live with the graphics, though id prefer better, I think - I think im missing something by playing without the sound, though

Fun - it has its moments, but its not on my top ten list.

Imperialism - i dont really put it in that category I compare it more with RTS like AOE, or citybuilders like Caesar3. Closest comparison is 1602, also a German game, interestingly enough. Vs 1602, it has its pros and cons. While my favorite games are the historical serious ones, i can get enjoyment from others. Im not sure this one has the ideal approach, but its definitely interesting.

Sound - nope, never got it to work

First Settlers - yup, ive never played the original, or the later ones.

Yah, well, the problem is my obsessiveness is keeping me from simply putting it aside. You see its CHAPTERS, and ive done 4, so why not get all the way to 10? Much easier to put down say, MS Flight sim 98, or Simtower. Put with a discrete goal, and im willing to stick to something id otherwise have given up on.

Simcity 2000 (apart from the scenarios, quite inferior to sand box mode IMHO) was one of the best "games" ever made(aside from being far superior to "goal" games like settlers, 1602, caesar3, etc). Whoever says otherwise should be beaten with sticks

What I meant was that a mediocre goalless game like simtower is easier to put down. As, so is a goaled, but essentially level oriented game like Caesar3. Settlers theres the tempatation to finish the story, esp when youre over a third through, even if its a mediocre experience.

well i screwed up chapt. 4. I was so intent on managing the quarries, making sure the metalworks made a pickaxe for an additional quarry, expanding, mining, etc i totally forgot about wood, and ended up with not enough to build another woodcutter or a forester, and ive got one working woodcutter running at like 2% prod. Feh!

I think im over the game. If I find myself at the local bargain bin i think i'll pick up starcraft, - I saw it for only $5 US, down from the usual $8. Till then I'll proceed in Settlers, using a walkthrough to speed things up

You might still be able to win the game. Just try to close all other places where wood is needed (best by destroying the roads. That way if wood is on the way it wont arrive) then build a forrester next to the woddcutter, hoping you still have enough wood around...

Wood is the lifeblood of any empire. You should have a set of two woodcutters with a forrester in the middle very near the start of every game. Extra woodcutters cutting down existing forests will still be necessary - you will be using lots of wood. But that steady early supply of wood is extremely important.

Note that you can get extra production out of your forrester by removing the road from the front of his house. Once he is in his house the road has no more use.

You do recall how long a Settlers chapter takes, dont you? And how little there is to do at certain points(even at "fast" speed)? But its good, i keep a book by the PC and get some reading done
