I don't think we demonize them in such a fashion. Our bias against them is much more subtle.

It's funny how you believe that they will strike Isreal with nukes. I'm not arguing the truth of that. Don't you think that the average Iranian thinks that Isreal has a couple of nukes aimed at them. Especially since, peaceful Isreal has carried out acts of war on Iranian soil.
You also take that show as the opinion of all Iranians or even every member of the Iranian government. That's like saying all americans support the war in Iraq or all americans feel that muslims have a one way ticket to hell.
The first thing Isreal could do to help Arabs/Muslims/Persian and etc from thinking that they eat baby Persian hearts is stop acts of aggression.

Oh yeah,
Growing up in Georgia, I did see things on television that negatively stereotyped.
Muslims- Homosexual, immoral, fanatical, worshippers of a false god.
Blacks- lazy, ignorant, immoral, murdering, conniving, thieving ignorant, ability to run fast especially from the police.
Jews- CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, Conniving, worshippers of a false god.
Asians- Small penis, conniving, shifty, women can do hair and nails.

Well stereotypes exist everywhere. But to paint a certain group as totally inhumane is another dimension. It reminds me more of a certain propaganda style (*BeBro circumvents the Godwin trap*)

I'd also say it makes a diff if such stereotypes seem to be left undisputed, or if they come under fire and are publically criticised.

All of the groups I named have been painted as totally inhuman and the stereotypes went undisputed for long periods of time. Some still believe them.

In Iran, the jews steal organs.

In America, neighbours and ex-spouses steal organs.

There's stupid **** going on like this all the time in soaps. There's a slightly different cultural atmosphere, but they're both on the same level.

HMM, because the HAVE TOO? If they stopped, it would show its irrelevance, and show the state losing control. That is unaceptable. Who exactly is watching is irrelevant- its the importance of beaming the message to show you are still in control.

Well, because what form propaganda takes is irrelevant to it being state sponsored propaganda. If the US State department made soaps and used the spread its political beliefs, yes, that is the same. But a privately produced show with no political message whatsoever?

It doesn't matter who sponsers it, the shows are on the same level, and have similiar content.

If you want, you can compare it to Canadian soaps instead - those get government money.

And there's a really great candidate for comparison too, that had everything from evil twins to a witch with a living manikin. (I think that show was Canadian, anways.... but I can't rememebr the name of it.)

1. Content is NOT the same- hvaing a romantic melodrama about some woman taking revenge against X individual for X romantic transgression (an ancient yarn) is significantly different from stating that the policy of a state is to commit massive crimes against humanity. In fact, it is beyond me how anyone can compare the two.

Ah, I remember the name of it now - Passions.

I think it is american after all, however.

But they do alot more then just steal organs, they even steal souls.

quote:
Teen terror Kay Bennett has loved Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald since childhood. But Miguel only has eyes for Kay's cousin, Charity Standish, a girl who possesses special powers of goodness. When Charity came to Harmony, and moved into the Bennett house, Kay's fury was unleashed! Kay's anger against her cousin intensified once Miguel admitted he would have loved Kay if Charity hadn't come to town. In fact, Miguel's revelation made Kay fight harder. Kay proved she'd do anything to win the man she loves-including sell her soul! After Kay sold her soul, she did nothing to help when Charity was sucked into the flames of hell.

Kay finally got her soul back, but she continued plotting to steal Miguel's heart. Even though Kay didn't know it, she had more than determination on her side-she also had witch Tabitha (and Tabitha's not-so-willing accomplice, Timmy) [Timmy is the manikin] Tabitha has always known that if Charity and Miguel consummated their love, then Charity would come into her full powers of goodness...and Tabitha would be destroyed. As a result, Tabitha was determined to help Kay get Miguel! In order to help Kay, Tabitha made sure Kay got her hands on a spell book called "Spells of Pain." Kay's own powers were awakened when Kay used the book. She cast a spell on her cousin, which resulted in Charity being frozen in a block of ice! As Kay looked on, a different version of Charity emerged from the ice-a "Zombie" version that was created to do Kay's bidding. Zombie Charity followed Kay's orders by pushing Miguel away. Kay was thrilled as the distance grew between Charity and Miguel! Unfortunately, Kay created even more of a monster than she realized. Tabitha's "Friends in the Basement" bestowed Tabitha's old powers upon Zombie Charity (much to Tabitha's horror)! As a result, Zombie Charity no longer simply existed to follow Kay's orders. Instead, she planned to unleash evil and mayhem upon all of Harmony! Zombie Charity's plan included sleeping with Miguel-an act that would kill the unsuspecting boy. Kay was determined to stop this from happening.

Meanwhile, despite Tabitha's protestations, Timmy made a Christmas wish to become a real boy. Timmy's wish came true and he became a living, breathing boy! Frustrated with all the evil around him, Timmy decided to rescue Charity from her icy tomb. He set out to find the demon's horn, the missing ingredient to complete the necessary spell. Before finding the demon's horn, Timmy came across something unexpected during his travels--the presumed dead Julian Crane! With Julian's help, Timmy was able to secure the demon's horn.

Back in Harmony, Zombie Charity realized Miguel was starting to think something was "off" about her. Desperate to fulfill her mission to bed Miguel, Zombie Charity bottled the "Essence of Charity." However, before she could use it, Zombie lost the vial--and Kay found it! Kay realized she could use Charity's essence to finally get Miguel. She sprinkled the essence on herself and Kay finally got what she wanted. Miguel, believing he was making love to Charity, made love to Kay! Kay was thrilled, but Miguel was horrified when he realized what had happened.

At the same time, an earthquake began to rock Harmony. Miguel sensed that Charity was in danger, and he was right. Miguel, Kay, and Jessica made their way to the cave and found the two Charity's facing off. Luckily, Timmy had shown up in the nick of time and was able to use the Demon's horn against Zombie Charity. But while Timmy and Charity won the battle against Zombie Charity, both were terribly wounded in the process. Poor Timmy lost his life, and left a grieving Tabitha behind. But in one final act of goodness, Timmy's heart went to Charity. With Timmy's heart, Charity was able to live on.

While Charity was recovering in the hospital, Miguel proposed to his beloved and she gleefully accepted. Of course, Kay was less than pleased with this development. Unable to take any more, Kay finally admitted to Miguel that she loves him and wants to be with him. A stunned Miguel firmly told Kay that he only wants to be with Charity-and reminded her that he only made love to Kay because he thought she was Charity. As the wedding day drew closer, Kay pressured Miguel into telling Charity about their night together. Miguel refused because he didn't want to hurt Charity; and grew more and more angry at Kay for trying to come between him and Charity. Kay's emotions boiled over as she insisted she was the one who'd been hurt in all of this-after all, she'd lost her virginity to Miguel. Meanwhile, Grace realized that her daughter has been scheming to steal Miguel for herself. Tensions escalated between mother and daughter as Grace accused Kay of evil actions; and Kay accused Grace of not caring about her!

Miguel and Charity made it all the way to the altar. But just as they were about to say "I do," Maid-of-Honor Kay fainted! Eve privately examined her and Kay learned some shocking news! She ran into the church and admitted to her father that she was pregnant! Sam was furious...and all hell broke loose when Kay revealed that Miguel was the father. Charity was devastated and ran out on a horrified Miguel. Kay was thrilled with the ensuing chaos-especially when Charity later broke it off with Miguel for good. Charity told Miguel that he needed to be with Kay and be a real father to the baby. But while Miguel was determined to do right by Kay and the baby, he would not give up on Charity. Miguel's determination paid off, as Miguel and Charity finally found their way back together-much to Kay's horror.

In another shocking turn of events, it turns out that Kay was not the only one who was pregnant. After a one-night stand with Julian Crane, Tabitha was horrified to learn that she was pregnant with his baby! Tabitha also learned from her "friends in the basement" that they were sending a new helper to assist in her evil machinations. Having left home as a result of tension with her mother, Kay wound up on Tabitha's doorstep. Tabitha and Kay were shocked to find out that Kay was the helper sent by the evil forces! Kay learned that Tabitha is, indeed, a witch and Tabitha began coaching Kay in the tricks of the dark side.

During a baby shower thrown by Jessica, Charity and Simone at Tabitha's house Kay was upset when Miguel once again announced that they had no future together. During their argument, Kay's water broke and she went into premature labor. At the hospital, Eve was forced to perform an emergency c-section and Kay gave birth to a premature baby girl. Despite a rocky start, little Maria Ivy survived, thanks to Charity's secret promise to "Death" that she would give up Miguel so that Maria could live. Even though Miguel promised Kay he would always be there for her and the baby, he is also determined to spend time with Charity. However, Kay is doing everything in her power to make sure Miguel sticks by her side at all times. Charity can't help but feel like an outsider as Miguel spends time with Kay and Maria...especially in light of the sacrifice she made for the baby's sake.

Despite her sacrifice, Charity continued to spend time with Miguel. As a result Death came back to claim Maria. Death gave Charity one last chance to give up Miguel forever. If she didn't then Maria would die. Charity chose to spare Maria's life, and has been pushing a reluctant Miguel away ever since.

Determined to finally break up Miguel and Charity for good, Tabitha concocted a plan to create the perfect male specimen that would turn Charity's eye. But when Endora decided to get in on the action, all hell broke loose. Endora saw to it that Reese became the perfect man! When Reese took off his shirt, Charity took notice. And with the help of another one of Endora's spell, Charity couldn't stay away from the former nerd. Unable to control herself, Charity seduced Reese. Reese couldn't resist Charity's advances and the two were about to make love when Miguel caught them together! Miguel demanded an explanation but Charity couldn't provide one for her actions. Miguel couldn't believe that his girlfriend and his best friend had betrayed him. Meanwhile, a forlorn Charity decided that since being good had gotten her nowhere, that from now on she would be bad!

Eventually with help from Ivy, Charity stopped her bad-girl ways and decided to focus on starting a career as a fashion designer. Miguel was so impressed with her talent that he offered to work as her business partner. The two found themselves growing closer. Determined to put a stop to this, Tabitha conjured up an evil version of Charity's mother Faith to talk Charity out of rekindling a relationship with Miguel. When this didn't work, Tabitha then transformed Kay into a dog and sent her out to attack Charity! Miguel was able to get to Charity in time but in the process he speared the dog, which (unbeknownst to Miguel) was really Kay!

Kay nearly died in the hospital but eventually pulled through. However, she was devastated to learn that she would never be able to have any more children, and she lashed out at Charity and Miguel. Tabitha fed Charity's guilt about all the pain she has brought to Harmony and as a result, Charity decided to leave Harmony for good. Miguel was determined to stop his beloved from leaving. Miguel couldn't change Charity's mind and she set off out of town. Despite Kay's pleas, Miguel took off after Charity in hopes of finding her.

In what way?

They both serve as "midday melodrama" and both have the effect of drawing an audiance which watches out of a curious fasination with how ridiculously bizzare and far-fetched it can be... and maybe a few complete morons who actually take it seriously and come away from it with completely distorted view of reality.

Notice I said when I was growing up in the south. And as late as last week I saw negative comments on tv about arabs/muslims etc. If you listen to or watch certain news/political shows you are likely to here someone spout some form or view that can be classified as racist.
Oerdin,
The level of equality and relative lack of overt racist entertainment/news is a new thing. Most of Western History is a history filled with racist propaganda. I can easily find examples of racist opinions directed at all of the non-european races.
The last thing I would point out yet again is that it is the west that brought about the situation in the middle east so if there is animosity directed at the west we have only ourselves to blame. We should try to address the animosity and come to terms with the arab/muslim world before they have those nukes that were mentioned. In other words before it's too late.
