I just picked it up a few days ago. It seems pretty cool so far. I'm still learning how everything works, but I really like it. There's a holiday theme in the world right now with Christmas trees in the big towns and a few related quests even. I guess there's an Ogre Santa Claus in one of the cities, but I don't have any way of getting there yet because I'm too low level still.
Also, for such a huge world, I have to say the game looks really nice. The time in the game world is also realtime, so if you load it up at night, it's dark outside, which is cool. |
My favorite part is simply how they focused on fun. There's not the huge drag later on in virtually ever other MMORPG game, there's no transportation issue (it's easy to move around everywhere), etc.
I was really astonished with the Griffon system when I first rode on one. The game is really beautiful, not because it pushes large amounts of polygons or tons of textures (it doesn't), but the art was designed around the engine's capabilities and it shows. It's immersive and beautiful, and even runs great in 1024x768 with max settings (minus anisotropic and pixel shaders) on my Radeon 7500 Mobility.

Waiting for EU release (grr at non-synched world release) at the moment. Played a bit of EU closed beta (20 tauren Druid) till the guy whose account it was sold it (he's my guildie from DAoC, couldn't let him not make $500 for a beta key), then played US Open for a bit (32 Dwarf Warrior), and am now waiting for EU Open in a week or two and then release.
I think from what i've played, that it deserves all the plaudits it's getting. I tried some EQ2 but the comparison is so in WoW's favour it isn't funny. Basic premise is this: WoW is fun to play, fun to level in. EQ2 feels like a job, trying to make things hard so people won't get to the end game fast or have fun (being logged in to sell your trade goods? you're kidding right?).

There's no real reason to PvP, the "war" doesn't make sense. On PvP servers, it's just ganking with no purpose or structure. In non PvP servers you have the player base divided in two, unable to communicate or interact at all outside of very rare circumstances, yet able to move around in each other's areas. It doesn't make any sense. PvP started off as a key point, then it was put on the back burner and is now a half-implemented afterthought.

There's a fineline between people /say'ing in game about "what loot u got" (which annoys me), and people going, "Goodday kind sir! I am Sir Mouthalot of the Eastern Kingdoms, son of Sir Sexalot of the Western Kingdoms and heir to the throne of Kumar! Might I examine your bag and see which riches you bring with you?" (also annoys me).
If you're referring to neglecting the latter, good on Blizzard. I'd rather they focus on their core audience and fun gameplay over weird people with fetishes and a penchant for "acting" with their keyboard. Perhaps they should consider LARPs or theatre, not video games. |
I'm talking about blizzard supporting the former.
Aside from the obvious immersion breaking things like zerglings, they also have gems like this:

As for the latter, well, you obviously don't have any interest in roleplaying, or even in knowing what it entails, but that's why there are usually servers specified for Roleplay. And blizzard, aside from not providing a PvP-RP server, doesn't even maintain the existing RP servers very well despite there being only a very limited amount of special rules that apply to them. (in-character names and no "out of game" chat in public channels)

Well, you'd be stupid not to quest - it'd take ten times as long to get through the grind without. It's either camp monsters or do the same quests over, and there's not much of a difference between the two once you've played through the game once. People are praising the quests for how fun they make WoW compaired to games like EQ, but just wait a month or two, and everyone will be griping about the repetitiveness of it.
As for it being the most varied, I think Anarchy Online has randomly generated missions with their own (randomly generated) areas.
Oh, I also forgot to mention the limited amount of character customization - the only variance between characters of the same class comes from ability points which for the most part are nothing but statistical adjustments on base skills. And you only get Fifty of them. Only fifty choices in the entirety of your character's life, and many of the choices only have a fraction of the impact that a pair of boots can.

I post lots of positive things. But I also speak my mind. If a game is crap, I'm going to call it crap.
quote: I think it's because he sucks at all games. That would explain why he was the only one who hated trash talking in Halo games in that old thread, not that he would play it anyway. |
I've played Halo, although just briefly, because it's crap.
But trash talking is not an in-game factor, it speaks of the competitiveness and immiturity of the players, not anything about the gameplay. Would I want to play with someone who trash talks? No. Is it because I suck? It's because I don't want to play with a brat who gets his rocks off playing a game. If you want to insinuate that I suck because of that, go ahead - I'm not a competitive person, and I don't play games so that I can gloat about 'pwning' people. It's not going to hurt my ego if you think I suck at teh gaming.

I've played both, though only beta for WoW.
I prefer CoH combat, though WoW seems good in this regard, with better combat than any other MMORPG I've seen.
The quests are admittedly quite samey. This is true of CoH also of course, but at least street hunting provides a change of pace there.
WoW has more stuff in it to provide a different change of pace, such as crafting, which you may love or hate, and PvP, which is still developing but will arrive properly before City of Villains does, bringing PvP to CoH. Also loot is important in WoW, whereas CoH has none other than enhancements. Again, you may love or hate loot and the camping/fighting it brings.
CoH's 'other stuff' comes is more limited, and based around badges for doing stuff. It's good fun.
I think it comes down to your take on loot, PvP and crafting really.

Say $12 a month, a 2hr movie in the cinema is what? $8? Add popcorn and a drink and the $12 you pay for a months entertainment is equal to what you spend for one cinema visit. Even if you only average 1hr a day you'll still get 30hrs of entertainment out of it.
During my addicted time with DAoC i did not buy a single other game (18months or so), that saves money as well.
