The US has quietly abandoned the search for WMD, which were the reason given for the invasion in the first place. It's a new development and it's significant.

So if it has to fit into one of the existing threads on Iraq, why not the El Salvador Option one? In retrospect, it makes sense. Death squads, No weapons of mass destruction. No weapons of mass destruction, death squads. Hey, it's all about Iraq.

What you really can't stand is your army is taking a bath in Iraq and you'd do almost anything to avoid that. Same thing was tried in Vietnam - it was called Operation Phoenix - didn't change the outcome there.

You must have me confused with someone else. I have consistently said that the current "bath" we are taking in Iraq is one of the cheapest in history. As a conflict, it rates somewhere below the Phillipines insurgency, which most Americans have never heard of (or were taught in history class but immediately forgot).

In Stalin's purges, people who had been previously punished were considered extra suspect, since their previous mauling at the hands of the State presumably had made them more hostile to it.

You could apply something similar here - I mean, anyone who gets tortured by American forces can probably be safely assumed to be against you. Voilą, and you can identify any number of hostiles for subsequent elimination.

Is anyone in the US actually doing anything about this?

It's become clearer that the Bush adminstration is tending more and more towards fascism. There's a long way to go yet, but the fear-mongering, religious mania, hysteria about liberals, traitors and homosexuals along with the militarism, disdain for facts and tolerance of torture is rather worrying.

The US needs an anti-fascist league. Even the Libertarians are starting to worry big time (you can tell, they've been quoting []The Nation[/i] with approval).

How about the AUAF (Apolyton Union of Anti Fascists)?
