I'm not questioning if he is a Nazi. I don't believe that for a minute. The real power of the Monarchy lies in its public relations ability. For good or ill, their opinion and judgement still matters in this world. A 20 year old that is only a couple of missing heartbeats from the throne should be better prepared to make a judgement call. A hundred years from now, perhaps dressing as a Nazi will not bring any more attention than dressing as Ghengis Khan would today, but there are many still alive who lived through the Nazi nightmare. It was very poor judgement and a total lack of sensitivity to a fairly fresh (from a historical point of view) event.

Given that a fair amount of his education was probably devoted to protocol, it is hard to imagine that there should not be outrage over this.

remember half his family are from Germany - the other half(on his mothers side) could be classed as really british.

We also had a monarch who was forced to abdicate due to giving intel to the Nazis during WW2.

In this light, and all the murky stuff surrounding the death of his mother - it seemed to me he may have been having a dig at his fathers side of the family? Maybe his grandmother had given him a hard time about something?
Still i dont buy the 'communist windmill' story for a second - if he did actualy say it then i think thats a pretty good indicator he knew it would create a fuss, and leads me back to thinking he was having a go at his 'german' links for whatever reason.

Its kinda cool having a screwy royal family - you should all find yourselves some

Im british - both my grandfathers fought in WW2, and one of them is jewish.

I'm not that offended - but maybe you need to come at it with a british sense of humour in the Monty Python/Spike Milligan tradition? Big deal? Nope. So he shows the world he's a bit of an idiot. Not like people don't already think that of the royals.

Now, were to actually go around being a Nazi, that would be a big cause for concern. But dressing up for a costume party is hardly the same thing as touting fascist beliefs.

Not very bright, but let's assume he was trying to dress up like Col. Klink. I would find that funny, or a fat man dressed as Shultz.
But it does show how quickly later generations forget the follies/importance of those from previoius ones.

Which is my point. Of what real purpose is the monarchy other than to provide a public face and historical continuity. If this was the son of a politician, I would agree that this is no big deal. But, we are talking about a heriditary head of state position...sure he isn't next in line, but he is 3rd. It seems that sensitivity to these type issues would be a main source of training. If it is, and he screwed up that big, then I think that this is a cause for some amount of alarm for monarcy system. Afterall, as our British posters so often tell us, they have no real power left. It is providing a face to national concience that is now their place, and wearing swastikas isn't the message I believe they want to promote.

Nah, the real problem with the House of Windsor is not pro-Nazism (confined to just one member, I think) but their general impulse control problems. See both of this centurys Edwards, Prince Charles, etc. The more restrained ones (the Georges, QE2 ) are not enough to really balance that. Other than Lord Mountbatten, has the family had any talented members this century (IE since Prince Albert married in)? Thats the reason id put this down to idiocy.

Hasnt happened in UK, but not impossible. Similarly the monarch has, in theory, direct authority over the uniformed military, which is one of the reasons getting Edward out and George VI in was of some importance.

Note that "constitutional" monarchs in Italy and Greece helped to screw things up. I doubt the House of Windsor would do that, but still.

Well, unless there were some private dealings between the monarchy and government, its basically not going to happen. If the monarchy publicly started throwing its weight around the monarchy abolitionists would have a field day, and Im sure they would receive widespread public support.

It goes back a lot further than that. Charles II did a remarkable balancing act, and William of Orange was effective (a a bisexual little hunchback too, which is a bonus). Other than that, they were pretty desperate.
