USA trip Got spare money?

I've never really travelled in the US before, but I am looking at taking a trip in a couple months now that I have work, and can afford to go. Specifically, I'd like to go to Texas.

One of the things I would like to do is to visit the polytubbies out that way, and to notify them well ahead of time, so that it doesn't come as a complete surprise. I've wanted to take a trip out this way for some time, but I had other priorities to sort out first.

I also would like some other suggestions as to what sorts of things I should do that way when I go.

If you come via SF/San Jose I'd be more than happy to take you out on the town and show you a good time.

The only place I have been in Texas is San Antonion, and it is one hell of a town

Not sure whether I will fly to Dallas from Seattle, since the flights are quite reasonable, or whether I will take the bus. It depends on how much time work will let me off for.

Thanks. If you are ever up in Vancouver, let me know.

Texas might be good for you, but Utah would be much better.

Yup, I love the 4 corners region from Moab and Green River (Canyonlands and Arches Nat'l Parks and the capital of offroad bicycling) in Utah down into the Hopi and Navajo reservations in Arizona, Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, and the site up in SW Colorado (whats the name?). I gotta get out of Kansas, I really love the west - Lake Powell here I come.

Nah, not enough golf courses

Thanks for the offer.

I'm planning Dallas, and Houston for sure. Got friends in both places.

If you wanted to go to Seattle then you should have come and hung out with MRT and I last week. We had fun drinking beer.

The bus ride should be very interesting to say the least. You will get to rub elbos with some of America's finest. Seriously though, I have met some very interesting people on the bus but sitting on it for hour after hour with no place to take a shower is not my idea of a good time. I sat next to two little girls once and they taught me alll about cartoons and other interesting stuff. Once there was a pimp and his "hoe" on board and he thought he ran the bus. He called the rest of us cattle. Anyway if you get near Tennessee you have a place to stay here.

Don't take greyhound for your visit, it's completely awful and will take forever. I looked at greyhound, it said it would take 59 hours to get from Seattle to Austin. You don't want to spend your precious vacation time on a bus.

According to Mapquest, driving would take 36 hours to commute the 2,386 miles between the two (or 72 hours, both ways).

In short: FLY!

Don't listen to him, Ben. Do it!!

I've gone from Canada deep into Mexico on Greyhound 3 times. It was the best experiences of my life, no word of a lie.

The first 24hours are difficult, but after that you may as well be stoned. Its crazy. And you'll never meet more interesting characters.

Edit: One time I went from Ottawa, Canada to San Diego, and from there to San Felipe, Baja Norte Mexico... non stop. It took over 4 days to get there, and another 4 to get back. And I only spent 2 nights in Mexico before heading back. It was awesome

Edit2: It was like driving from Paris to Tehran. You can't beat it. I highly reccommend you take the bus

Texas is cool... while I definately wouldn't want to be convicted of a crime there. Its clean as hell too... I remember driving in from Louisiana into Texas on the Lake Charles, LA to Beaumont, TX run. It difference was striking immediately crossing the border.

Everybody has their own opinion, to some texas is rich in history. There are some places in Tx that i would prefer not to see however i must, to get from universal city tx to ogden Utah. Besides texas has a lot of very nice people here Now let me say this I didnt say we didnt have our share of slimeballs either.

As for riding the bus i dont know bout that if you have the time and want the adventure go for it i know that tuberski and i enjoy driving the 2000 or someodd miles to get to his home town just cause its a 28 hour drive strait thru and we spend that time together tallking and stuff.
