I haven't done cross country but I've gone from DC to NYC by bus. Horrible experience. Took about 10 hours, horribly uncomfortable the whole way, crowded, hot, and noisy. Train trip was far better, faster, comfortable, better scenery, etc. I even bought a deck of cards whilst on the train for some solitaire.
