Oh and Ben, have your bus been boarded by US Border Patrol yet? Those guys are hardcore. Not sure what your route was though, but if you went from SA to LA via El Paso, then you must have (or will) see them.
Here's a couple of badasses patroling the Rio Grande in Brownsville, TX on my most recent bus trip (timestamp is wrong):

The lunch barbeque (sausage, chicken, and brisket) is now finishing in the wet smoker, You have never had smoked brisket as tender as I can get it (cured, dry smoked, then marinaded in cider and spice, then steam smoked). There will be potato salad (with mustard, green onions and celery) and cabbage (cooked in broth and cider, with corded beef, to go with lunch.
The first fire is built for the supper bargeque and will be lit off around noon (without brisket, it only takes about 6 hours).
It will be leg of lamb, pork shoulder and pork ribs, ssusage, with beans and slaw.
Shortly I will be charging the ice chests on the decks and by the pool.

Boarded at Van Horne Texas by the border patrol. And then again, we were stopped earlier in El Paso, Texas to check through everyone's bags. |
Awesome. Did you look across the river into Cuidad Juarez when you were in El Paso? Those border cities sprawl... something to see, especially at night.

Yeah, I saw Cuidad Juarez, made me realise just how close I was to Mexico, which was kind of odd given how I hadn't even crossed the US border until this trip. |
Oh yeah, right now you're further south than a sizable chunk of Mexico because of the way the Rio Grande flows.

Sounds like a plan. How are you supporting yourself? Savings? And out of curiousity, where are you staying?
And BTW, you'd be a fool not to go into Mexico while you're down there. You can take Greyhound to one of the TX border cities (like Laredo), walk over the bridge, do some shopping, eat some food, then head back. You won't regret it. Border towns are a blast (for me at least).

Actually I've been to Laredo and the bus station is a skip and a jump from the foot bridge across the border. I only passed through Nuevo Laredo to get to the central bus terminal to go to Mexico City but it was... interesting. I've been to Brownsville/Matamoros too and the Mexican side is alot nicer than Nuevo Laredo in my opinion.
Still, make the effort to get down to Mexico. You'll never be closer.
