From reading this thread I can state the Swedish justice system is one of the most screwed up in the world.. They treat rape victims like the suspects. Damn socialism..

People convicted of rape should get at least 20 years behind bars.

I'm surprised that newspapers mention the ethnic background of the suspects. I thought Swedish newspapers (unlike Danish ones) generally did not publish this information.

It was a relief to learn through the Aftenposten article that Swedes have been donating money to cover expenses of the Högsta Domstol appeal, and a lawyer has volunteered to handle the case for free.

According to CO's fourth link, the Diet is expected to pass a new sexual crimes law on the 1st of April, which will reclassify certain cases of sexual abuse as rape; it says that the appeals court had probably upheld the original sentences had it already been in force.

They also say it's unlikely this case goes to the Supreme Court, since with the impending law-change a changed verdict would have no value as a precedent.

That changed sometime during the '90s.

Too bad, really. It was funny when you heard nothing about a suspect's immigrant background before the judgement was made public, and included expulsion.

Molly, I don´t think there´s a age limit on consuming alcohol. You have to be 18 to legally buy alcohol, but I don´t think it´s illegal to actually drink it if under 18... Neither is it illegal to get someone drunk so you can have sex with them against their will. It is however against the law to have sex with anyone under the age of 15 (with or without the alcohol bit) which, I think, is why the 30 year old didn´t get his sentence of 5 years in prison reduced.

Well, the Aftenposten newspaper article I read said those people came from the Mid-East...

I reckon they could technically be Israelis, but all things considered, it does seem unlikely.

Brottsförebyggande rådet published some statistics on gang rapes which concluded that ~3/4 (IIRC) of the rapists had immigrant background, mostly from the middle-east. As they are so overrepresented, it makes you wonder what role their muslim background may play.

In the article in Göteborgs Posten the perps birth place wasn´t revealed. And CI didn´t know this when she assumed they were from some islamic country. And I seriously doubt that Islam as an religion has anything to do with gang rape. I think it has more to do with the general view on women in the Middle East...

The legislation regarding rape is getting more strict. I don´t exactly know when it´s to be implemented. I think June 1:st or possibly not until 2006. But it will be more strict. And not a day to soon if you ask me.
