quote: Originally posted by Ben Kenobi Why, if marriage is merely a contract between two people, should said contract be restricted to only two people? | This is one of the strange thing I find in regards to the debate about gay marriage, the whole slippery-slope argument. Why, if we allow gay marriage, what's next, polygamy? And the answer is an unabashed yes. The fact of the matter is that there is nothing wrong with either, supporting one and not the other seems unjustified. It would be good if people started to recognize this, and if the government did as well.
But this whole mess can easily be avoided by simply getting rid of the legal status of marriage altogether. Allow people to do whatever they want, live with whoever they want, etc. but keep the government out of it.

Not really, Ben. Your going to have to find two women of education and means to press a case to the SCoC that they should be allowed to share the same man.
Yes, Polygamy is an issue, but I think it is more a boogeyman in this debate.

It's a valid concern for two reasons.
First is the impending recognition in Europe of the polygamy rights for Muslims, and the subsequent demand from Muslims here for similar recognition.
They have a pretty good argument from the Charter, with respect to their section 2 rights, to freedom to practice their religion.
Of course, they could counter your argument by saying that so long as the women freely choose to enter their religion, and to marry them, that this will prevent the concerns over the equality of women.
The second is what I was referring to, the folks out in Bountiful, BC. They openly engage in polygamy, and have yet to face any consequences from the provincial government.
