Just having you on board as a contributor Curt is reward enough!! Don't worry about a deadline here as I'm a little ways off from the beta release still.

So please finish whatever work needs to be done before you get to this. Truth be told I'm really curious to see what "Tyrany of the Daleks" will be like upon its release.

A request for help:

Friends, I have come into an issue with the events and general story line for Jules Verne. At issue is the story "How Few Remain" by Harry Turtledove which is based on the what if scenario of the South winning the US Civil War. This was also as you might remember made into a fantastic scenario by Our_Man .

I had wanted to include this story into the timeline of Jules Verne but ran into a critical problem. The story "How Few Remain" takes place in the 1880's, a generation after the US Civil War, and it was at the dawn of the US Civil War that "Jules Verne" scenario was to begin.

So here's the problem in a nutshell, I want to include the events relating to South's victory in the Civil War however I want the US (Imperial Alliance) to have the opportunity to defeat the Rebels (Victorian Alliance) as they had done historically. Is there a way to use the events to disable other events? Such as if a prominent southern city like Richmond, Charleston or Atlanta is captured could that somehow disable the events of the story "How Few Remain"? Or will the only solution be to include two different event texts?

Use closed tech trees. There will have to be a point where each branch can be chosen or acquired.

I don't think you can have one main branch and one closed because you are effectively stopping a set of events from happening meaning that the techs have to be totally divergent.

Ya know Harry I think you just gave me the idea I was looking for. It was foolish to assume I could incorporate all the aspects of the "How Few Remain" storyline into the events, but I may be able to certain aspects of the story in a limited way.

This is what I had in mind: At the games beginning Mexico belongs to the neutral civ, to represent Benito Juárez's rule as a truly independent leader free of foreign influence in the early 1860's.

Upon the capture of the Sonoran and Chihuahan states or possibly Mexico City itself by an attacker a war will be triggered between the attacker and the USA (Imperial Alliance). The same will happen in the event that the USA is the attacker, the CSA (Victorian Alliance) will then declare war.

Its allot weaker than I had planned originally but its probably the best shot at including "The Second Mexican War". It also might give me an excuse to feature one of these camel fella's below. In the book the camel was used heavily by the South in desert campaigns, so depending on who the aggresor is they might receive one of the four legged friends for operations in the Mexican deserts. Though I might have a hard time explaining where the Americans or Germans get their hands on the camels .

Well Harry two thank you's are in order then. First thanks for the compliment on the camels, though the real credit as always should go to Gareth who produced them (I just modified them using existing cavalry units) and thanks as well for the information on the American experiment with camels.

Its interesting to wonder just to what degree they could have been incorporated into the US military had the government support of the idea been stronger at the time.

Yeah, as the article says they could have been good for long supply chains if the government hadn't been adverse to how they looked.

Indeed they may have made the supply routes from Texas to California easier, as they had already been so usefull in British military service in Australia for years by the time the American Camel Corps had been conceived.

Aparently surviving Camels of the American Camel Corps were seen living in the wild of the American South West as late the early 1900's when the few remaining were mostly killed off by a combination of hunters and ranchers.

In any case instead of making a national specific Camel Trooper for use in the game I just might use a generic version of the unit that can be event generated for any civ that captures regions where they proved historically usefully.

I think that would be best. Camels are really advantageous in the desert areas, but nothing beats a horse on the plains. No reason to fill up some nice unit slots with redundant units.

Well camel nonsense aside I am still working on this project.... time permiting that is. Right now I'm actually giving serious thought to using multiple unit files as oppose to a single unit graphic.

Right now this is simply to free up more room by removing event trigger units in the second unit graphic that will have already been used and eliminated in the first unit graphic.... thus making room for new event trigger units in the second graphic.

Perhaps i can continue working on my own too though, since it is not only for TOT.

your unit clearly is remarcable, Curt, but imo it doesnt look at all like the Nautilus, which gave the impression that it was a sea monster

Static units like buildings are a problem in ToT, as it is hard to hide the health bar that hovers above the unit.

Mercator has a utility to hide the bar, however.

Well Curt's thats music to my ears!! I'm already in your debt for just creating the one unit.... which I think is fantastic. However I know what its like to not be satisfied with your own work if you don't think its up to par, so if you want to take another run at it, well I will be even more in your debt sir !!.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

More info eh Martin? Well I suppose I can give you the basic concept behind the game. There will two paths the player can participate in during the course of this game..... which will likely be between the years 1861 and 1901.

Path a) will be the path of standard Civ II gameplay. This path will entail conquest, research, war and peace, diplomacy and alliances, trade and the quest for wealth. The playable civ's will be as such:

This path is quite familiar and can indeed leave a smart player in a position of considerable power by the games end.

Path b) however will be slightly different. It will essentially be an interactive story that will begin with the discovery of the legendary source of the Nile in Africa. This discovery will lead the human player on a path of unprecedented adventure that will lead from King Solomon's Mines in Kukuanaland to the entrance to the center of the earth, it will take you from the cliffs of Skull Mountain to the lost temples of Atlantis, you will be propelled from the hidden plateau of the Amazon to Cleopatra's lost city of Bala, and finally to the lunar surface itself.

This will be a path familiar to those who have played HT's "Atomic Eagle: Hand of the Reaper" scenario. Only by embarking on the path of exploration and discovery will certain technologies become available to the human player, technologies that will both benefit and may ultimately save your civilization in the face of an unimaginable terror.

Once the tech tree has been completed I will have more time to create some up to date screenshots and more details will be forthcoming.

Well Harry I had always wanted to make an update of Jules Verne, but it wasn't until I played Atomic Eagle that I realized that kind of game was possible with the Civ II engine. I realized that kind of gameplay would be ideal for a 19th century pulp fiction scenario.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I love both paths, but especially the adventure path. I saw a great documentary about Atlantis yesterday (made for Discovery channel). It made me want to play scenarios about it. Unfortunatly I only know one such scen, and it's about the fall of Atlantis. But including it in your scen will be great (and the other things you will include).

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

As for graphic previews.... I still don't have a whole lot to offer. As of right now these are the Victorian, Imperial and Oriental infantry units that will be used in regular gameplay. One of the issues I'm debating at the moment is how to upgrade the units, whether there will be some sort of "Advanced Infantry" units to be researched down the road or just replace the unit with an upgraded unit when the new unit file itself is loaded in, as was done in Nemo's Red Front.

I made a smaller and more 3d looking nautilus. Imo the unit shouldnt be one of the biggest naval units around, since it was relatively small in comparisson to the ships it was sinking.

I am very anxious to see Curt's unit though!
