Surprise, the Oscar numbers were way off this year when the Red States were counted. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto...s_tv_ratings_2. Looks like the Academy might do well in the future to nominate the more popular films that American actually likes for "best picture" than to openly discriminate against them if they are "fantasy," "scifi" or "religious." This could well describe Spiderman II, Spotless Mind and the Passion.

Lord I hope not. They have the People's Choice Awards (which has a far lower audience) for that.
Neither got discriminated against because they were scifi or religious. Spider-Man II just isn't BEST PICTURE material. Passion...well...MAYBE had a small chance, but it wasn't generally a good movie. The only good parts about it, guess what, DID get nominated.
I would rather they continue to nominate artistically worthy films then live by the standards of pop culture. Let those movies make hundreds of millions, and let these get the awards.
And the show was only off two million. That means that without an LOTR, they lost only 6% of the audience. Or, you could look at it as 41 million tuned in to see movies nominated for best picture that grossed less than $100 million. Either way, I'm not fearful of any of that, and neither should the Academy be. |
Perhaps we ought to merely cut off consideration of the potential list for films that can be nominated to those among the top 10% of box office receipts at the time the ballots go out at the end of January. All films in that top 10% are automatically nominated.
I really believe the academy has it in for certain film types. Last year was a shock in that Return of the King won everything because it was considered to be a fantasy film. This year, I was totally impressed by Spiderman II, another fantasy film. It was a trememdous film. Spotless Mind, science fiction, was beautiful, well acted and truly inovative. Passion was powerful beyond all measure. No film ever was as moving as this one.
They all should have received nominations.

I expect nonsense from Ned, but you Snowfire? Spiderman II for Best Picture? You're kidding me.
Good action flick, but not evidence of good filmmaking, from the acting, directing, etc. Hell, it wasn't even nominated for a Golden Globe Best Picture!
Eternal Sunshine, OTOH, I think had an argument, but it's hard to knock any of the nominated pictures off. I've heard great things about all the nominated pictures, and The Aviator had the Scorcese name behind it as well.

Ned: Top 10%? Interesting idea. Out of the (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/index2004.html)556 movies nominated this year, that makes 56 (rounding up, of course, to be generous).
Lets look at the top 10% for 2004, shall we?

So, to wrap up:
4 of the 5 nominees for BEST PICTURE fall into Ned's category of top 10% grossing. The only one that falls out is Finding Neverland (65 on the year - of course, since it starred two leads and had a screenplay all nominated for Oscars, plus won the score and had at least another nod, it should get cut some slack).
So Ned...first, the qualifications for the Nedscars include almost all Best Pictures nominees, plus "White Chicks", "Without a Paddle", and "Barbershop 2".
That's great logic for the Best Picture...in the Nedaverse!
EDIT: Oh, and to point out, with Ned's qualifications, Eternal Sunshine STILL does NOT get nominated.
PWNED!

Here's the defense: Spider-Man II, while a GREAT movie, is not Academy Award material. First, the plot, while great for a comic book adaptation, is not of the quality that many Best Pictures are. I could go into it further, but I'll just say: "I'm Spider-Man...no, I'm not...oh wait, I am", is not a very good storyline for anything but a comic book sequel. Next, the acting was good, but at times melodramatic. Also, the ending was contrived. My big question: Doc Ock suddenly changes and sees good: WHY?! The ending was one of the most "Deus ex Machina" that I've seen.
It was one of my favorite movies this year. It did win Special FX, which it deserved. Artistically, however, (and that's what Academy Awards are given for: art, not entertainment), it doesn't hold a candle to those nominated.
