Well the 77th Academy Awards have been announced. I'd like to thank the Academy for making me $100 richer in the pool at our theatre.

So, what do you think of the winners? I picked the top 6 - Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Actress, so I basically agree with the voters on those ones.

Anyone else make a bit of money on the Oscars? Is anyone here outraged by any of the winners, or just bored ?

Chris Rock was the best thing about it, apart from Morgan Freeman being honoured.

And I didn't know that Elmer Bernstein had died.

IMHO it was a mediocre show.
There were better hosts for the show in the past, just as Billy Crystal or Whoopie Goldberg
(although I don´t want to say that Chris Rock was bad, just that there were better ones ) .
I also didn´t like the new procedure of not presenting some of the Oscars on the stage but instead withhin the auditorium.
(This way the Oscars seemed to be divided into two classes, the better ones where you could go ionto the stage and give your speech and the lesser ones where you weren´t allowed to do it)
Aside from this there were few surprises.
As the Aviator got more and more Awards for more technical categories, you could easily predict, that he wouldn´t get awards for the bigger categories (like actor in a leading role or best film )
What I really didn´t like was the Oscar for the best song. IMHO there were much better songs, like the songs from Chorus or Shrek 2.
And of course I´d liked to see the Oscar for best foreign film go to "The Downfall"

Might as well have had John Ashcroft hosting it in that case.

It was a real pleasure to see Hilary S**** filling in for Gwyneth Plastic and Halle Berry this time.

Of course Halle did win a Razzie for 'Catwoman' but accepted it in good heart and with grace.

And at last the acting ability of Cate Blanchett gets recognised- a rather late consolation prize for the Academy's overlooking of her performance in 'Elizabeth'.

Chris Rock was, in my opinion, a great host because he managed to puncture the air of self-importance that many of these celebrities have. If it was just a night to celebrate the artform, it wouldn't need to be televised. But it is televised, and it usually ends up a self-congratulatory circle jerk.

I'm glad to see that Rock somewhat recognizes the excess of America's obsession with celebrity.

At first I thought that Aviator was going to be like Return of the King last year, winning the bulk of the awards- while I am not surprised that Clint beat Martin for best director, I was surprised that Million Dollar baby won, thought happy, cause I think it was the best movie of the year.

I thought Sidney Lumet's acceptance speech was great.

As for making the telecast end of time, which was why they gave out Oscars on the floor, maybe next time don't sing all the god damned nominated songs! And I miss not seeing clips of the animated short features.

What was with having Carlos Santana accompany Antonio Banderas's ballad?? It was like putting chili peppers on an ice cream sundae.

Most of the clothing was boring. Thank God for Prince -- a purple coat over pink pants. That guy has style.

I miss Miss Piggy as co-host. No one can act the stupendous poor sport like Miss Piggy. She gets to say what everyone else is thinking.

a lot of people hated rock and want to bring back Billy Crystal?

What are they high?

I like edgier comedy. Though Rock was a bit tame.

He offended Sean Penn though. Sean Penn came out defending Jude Law. .

This shows how seriously hollywood actors take themselves.

exactly

hollywood is too full of themselves.

It's not that he isn't funny, he's old fashioned. There's a reason why the ratings are declining.

And those articles state how bad Chris Rock was. But it was the best rated show since 2000.

If it continued on the way it was going, the ratings would continue to decline, and once all the old people died off, no one would watch.

Come on. That quip about the "four presenters" was brilliant. He merely said what everyone was thinking.

And Sean Penn was such a loser, at least Tim Robbins and Jeremy Irons could take a joke.

I thought Chris Rock was fine. I thought he was gonna get himself dragged off the stage at the beginning, for cutting a bit close to the bone with his "stuck with Colin Farrell? Wait for a star!" shtick. It was clearly a bit too personal for some in the crowd -- and I'm sure that was the point. But he saved it nicely with "Want Denzel but can only get me? Wait for the star!"

I doubt he'll be asked back unless he dials it down a bit. Personally, I think they should go with Queen Latifah -- a better fit for Oscar than Grammy.

I tuned in and out, missed lots of it. Was extremely pleased to see Jamie Foxx win. Didn't see The Aviator or Million Dollar Baby, so can't say if the results were fair. But it's starting to look like Scorcese will never win, and Eastwood can throw anything out there and it will be loved.

BTW, does anyone else think Scorcese is starting to look like a living caricature of himself -- or, worse, looking more and more like Eugene Levy?

I also had most of the top awards right. I liked the opening where Rock told Hollywood that it was out of touch with the people. I have long thought this. Although Aviator and Baby deserved to be nominated as best films, I think Spiderman II, Spotless Mind and Passion should also have been nominated. Then we really would have had an interesting Oscars with a lot of people watching who also watched these unominated, but very popular films.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I find it interesting Sean Penn defend Jude Law's acting ability but no one defended the fat joke aimed at Michael Moore.

Again, this goes to show you how over sensitive hollywood is about the work they do.

What's more important? A unknown actor, or an activist who can fight against a corrupt goverment (I'm exaggerrating Moore's importance, but you get the picture).

And Rock never said anything bad about Jude Law's acting ability, he just said he's not a star.

But Penn does not accept this.

I hate actors that are this way. They are so self important.
