You are the guys who want to starve her to death. You think that's not suffering? You think two weeks of increasing pain before you die isn't an extended period? Jesus, I support a person's right to die if their wishes are clear. I might even support it if the only thing keeping them alive is machines and there's no hope for recovery. Neither condition applies in this case, however. It's a little scary how willing some of you are to starve a helpless woman to death based on the questionable judgement of her erstwhile husband...

That's a catch-22, since no state but Oregon will allow you to legally do such a thing.

That being said, I hope the doctors can administer high doses of pain-killers to minimize things.

It's sad when one starts to believe his own propaganda and becomes so dillusional that they don't understand what murder is.

I already tried to educate Mrs. Tubes on the difference between murder and euthanasia. Go read that post because while I have hope for her maybe understanding things, I have little for you.

I want her to be able to die quickly and painlessly, but people like you won't allow legalized euthanasia, so this is the only way to end her suffering... it sucks, but it's better than the alternative... and this isn't based on questionable judgement from her husband, it's based upon two seperate court cases and the decisions of court appointed experts.

frankly Drake, I'm disappointed in you... although I consider you a partisan hack, I at least thought you to be a reasonable person capable of making a sound decision with all the evidence, but you are choosing to ignore the facts. I guess I was wrong.

Nobody wants her to starve to death. I'd be all in favor of administering a lethal dose of sedatives. But Florida isn't progressive enough to have an assisted suicide law. So it's the only opition for ending her condition relatively quickly.

What's worse--2 weeks of starving (that can be mitigated by painkillers, btw), or 15+ years being a vegetable?

quote:
Jesus, I support a person's right to die if their wishes are clear.

If someone hasn't had the chance to articulate such wishes clearly, I don't see why they should be "punished" for it thusly. I can't think of any sane person who would want to exist under such conditions. The fact that, overwhelmingly, nobody wants to be like that is evidence enough for me that her wishes were very likely to be allowed to die.

I fail to see any qualitative difference between the machine that is a feeding tube and, say, an iron lung. And the overwhelming expert medical opinion is that there is no hope for her recovery. I guess you would only accept a unanimous opinion? Good luck finding that.

Ah, the smearing of Michaeil Schiavo continues. Of course, the judgement of her husband isn't all there is here, as you also have the judgement of many, many experts in medicine. But good way to attack her husband.

from wikipedia: media tycoon Robert Herring offered US$1 million to Terri Schiavo's husband if he agrees to sign all rights to her parents ... Michael Schiavo's attorney, George J. Felos, stated that his client found the offer "offensive" and that he had already rejected other monetary offers, including one of US$10 million, to sign over his rights to Terri

I agree with this... I don't like the idea of removing the feeding tube, but she is in PVS, which means she won't feel anything anyways.

While the fundies make it seem like "starving" her is cruel, it's really not because she CAN'T FEEL A DAMN THING.

and IMO, Michael Schiavo has proven himself, by standing by his wife for 15 years, that he is honestly fulfilling her wishes.

As was noted above, outside groups have offered millions of dollars for her care. Schiavo would have no reason to decline such offers were his motives based on greed.

I'll repeat--that is illegal in Florida. They can't do anything BUT remove the feeding tube to allow her to die.

Im still courious as to why the husband is fighting the family. Why not just wash his hands of the whole deal? his wife has been this way for quite some time why not just let her family deal with her?

quote:
(3) Given that the jury awarded $750,000 to be used in part for Terri's therapy, why hasn't Schiavo provided any rehabilitation for her since 1991?

When asked by King about the issue of rehab, Schiavo described some early efforts to help Terri, such as an experimental surgery in 1990. But he never identified when this rehab took place.

Which is an important point. The only efforts ever undertaken to improve Terri's condition took place in 1990 and 1991. They had ceased by the time of the malpractice trial in 1992 because her insurance coverage had run out. Indeed, the pressing need to restart therapy was an urgent part of the malpractice case. It could have--and should have--paid to restart the rehabilitation that had been abandoned due to lack of funds.

Once Terri's $750,000 was in the bank, however, Schiavo would not approve a single cent of it to be spent on rehabilitation. Not only that, but once the money was in the bank, Schiavo ordered a "do not resuscitate" order placed on Terri's chart so that if she had a cardiac event, the doctors would not attempt to save her. And within a few months of the money being deposited, Schiavo also refused to permit curative treatments, such as antibiotics for infections. If Terri had died during the early or mid-1990s, as Schiavo's orders were designed, he would have inherited somewhere around $700,000.

He is fighting the family because he wants to honor his beloved wife's wishes. He stood by a vegetable's side 15 years to get this to happen. It seems pretty convincing he is doing this out of love.

He turned down 10 million, of course I trust him.

He denied her access to antibiotics to stop a urinary tract infection in 1993 (just after the malpractice award came in, naturally) out of love? Color me unconvinced...

that source is wrong... according to wikipedia, he stopped therapy in 1992... after 2 years of intense therapy, there was no chance in her condition.

I like your strategy Drake. You have no facts to present, so you try to assassinate the character of her loving and devoted husband.
