But we are all hardened gamers Adagio, we need to get the opinion of a 13 year old who played Doom 3 as his first fps.

Atmosphere? Of course, you needed to, err, prepare to be scared when playing the game. I don't think Doom3 or any game for that matter can scare you if you're playing in the middle of the day and with the mindset to have some quick fun. Then it won't work. But if you actually knew it's supposed to be a horror game, and therefore played it with a good sound system, late at night with low lights, it's scarier.
I will soon complete Doom3 for the third time. I remember 85% of the times when monsters jump out at you. I still get scared by some of the atmospheric places in the game and, most of all, the sounds.
BTW, Doom2 seemed scary in its time, too .

I find most horror movies rather boring, as they're too similar, although some are good. But none are scary, agreed.
The background sounds, yup, great... not only the evil voices, also the thumping sounds, the humming sounds, and the one I liked the best was I can't even understand what, something slightly similar to a chorus.
