Smith, a former Eagle Scout, previously served as the Boy Scouts' director of programming, Shields said. "As a professional scouter, he was in more administrative positions -- most recently developing programs -- and not in direct contact with the youth," Shields said. Shields said the Boy Scouts are "shocked and dismayed" by Smith's arrest, but the group has cooperated with investigators in the case. "We surrendered his work computer to authorities," he said. Smith surrendered to authorities Friday and was released without bond, according to court records. There was no immediate comment from his attorney.

It sounds like you are the one equating being gay and being a peadophile.

If the 2 aren't related, then this guy being a paedophile has no bearing whatsoever on the boy scouts stance on gays.

The reason why they can't accept gays is because mothers would not feel comfortable sending their sons to camp with gays. The mothers are wrong of course. But the BSA has to cater to a homophobic america, or they will cease as an organization.

The issue was banning gay leaders (he was dismissed for being a gay leader, not a gay member) because they thought it would lead to relationships with the young boys.

Clearly that is happening anyway, and is independent of sexuality.

I'm not equating being gay to being a pedophile, I'm pointing out their hypocrisy in taking a "moral highground" in banning gays while allowing a pedophile to be a high-ranked leader.

That's the point.

It's an independent variable, and banning gays doesn't prevent anything

So it's a good thing they prevented gay leaders from being members to keep those damn pedophiles out.

But if the reason that gays are banned is because, according to a strict Christian interpretation, they are immoral, and yet pedophiles, also immoral according to Christianity, are in the top ranks, then there is some serious hypocracy going down.

I don't think it's so much the gays scout leaders will have sex with the boys. It's that parents fear that the gay scout leaders will indoctrinate them into the "gay lifestyle" we hear so much about. And their sons will "become" gay.

Of course what they don't realize is the boy scouts has always been gay. . I say this even though I was in the boy scouts for about a year before I grew bored of it.

There was a guy in my old home town who was abused by a Scout master. It's not a new issue. Apparently, gays are drawn to positions like this (e.g. Catholic priest, wierd-looking pop star) where they have the opportunity to go after young boys...

I think that gays who come out of the closet on a boat though would be in real danger, or at least when I was in, this was the case. We had a guy in my division who just dissapeared up to squadron and when I looked into it, found out that he was gay. On shore, they dealt with his outprocessing, but they were worried for his safety on board.

The hypocrisy is the leadership of the Scouts (who make such calls) in taking the stance that they are "moral", when at least one of them is a pedophile.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a good many of the Scout leadership council are pedophiles.

The same scout leadership that refused gays from being members were downloading porn of prepubescent boys having sex.
