You want to set up visas for all countries without biometric passports so be it, every country has the right to do what they wish. Just don't act like whiny *****es when those same countries retaliate by forcing you to get a visa. Then maybe your next Geneva trip will not be so smooth.

We can perfectly well decide how entrance to our country works. We do it right now. So does every other country. Go worry about your own deal. Imagine telling the Swiss how to run their border. They would just laugh at you. Get this straight. You ARE NOT a US citizen by being a world citizen. We are a seperate country.

Yet I don't see the Swiss telling other people how to make their passports.

Oh wait, except that one bit about putting a big "J" for German jews in WW2, but that's beyond the point...

So that leaves the EU's poor relation contries -- Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, etc. -- who won't meet the deadline.

OK, so nobody's going to be inundating our German consulates for visas. There will be no problem for the vast majority of EU visitors to the US.

I have no problem with nagging the poor relation countries that are no longer poor relations, if the calculation is that it will help the situation (by giving gov'ts excuses to make the changes or whatever). If Germany can do it, so can Italy.

Erm, none of those 4 countries are particularly poor (in fact Ireland has a higher GDP than the UK nowadays) so you will be shooting yourselves in the foot by blocking their tourism...

Full PM-box? Change here!

In fact, Germany is the 5th poorest among the EU15. Only Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal are poorer. Ireland on the other hand is the second richest (only beaten by Luxembourg). Obviously not a matter of wealth. But then, I oppose this biometric crap.

If you look at he list, I think wealth is only part of the equation; the countries who will meet the deadline are countries whose governments have a history of efficiency, for want of a better word -- of getting things done, and done well.

But the Swiss don't take in $56 billion/year in foreign tourist dollars.

But actually, I agree with you: we can do what we want. The problem is we say we're going to do this (demand visas from non-compliant EU countries), but we won't. That's just lame.

Well TCO, I don't want to question America's rights as what to do with their borders (except when it would fail with human rights), BUT the whole world has shifted to be way more global than before and America is profiting a LOT from that, so you can't neglect one thing and use the other.
The days where you can say: **** the rest we can do what we want are numbered; the more everyone gets involved in everyone elses business just like America gets involved in pretty lot businesses pretty everywhere on the globe, wouldn't you agree?

In fact it would be nice to see more kind of cooperation, but the US stance is always perceived as: do as we say!

So true, I've been trying to help a Russian (Uzbek) enter the EU. He told me it would be easier if I sign a paper saying that I will take responsibility for him and pay for all the costs that he could possibly have here (provide lodging, food, pay for medical treatment should he become ill, accidents,...). Yeah sure
Well now he needs a hotel room and whatnotelse.

In any case everyone please watch your language.

You have been a great source of info on this thread. It seems to me that the Administration would definetly have benefited from a more cooperationalist attitude towards the deal and not, here is what we require, now do it type of attitude. That doesn't particularly work as good as the alternative (cooperation).
