Can anyone comment on useage in other parts of the globe (India, Arab world, etc)?

I like the system here as well. Text messaging is also helping to improve my Chinese.

I generally ignore my phone anyway to be honest - i figure if its that important they'll keave a msg.

Having said that....I *always* answer it if it rings during sex, mainly to make the male in question feel inadequate and humiliated. Especially if the conversation ends up lasting an hour or so.

Wonder why I'm single

Now a phone call just after sex has been concluded can be a bonus. For the one-night stand people it provides and easy excuse to ensure a quick exit.

It can be even more effective if you throw in a phrase like " I haven't had good sex in ages either" or "Ralph, yes last night was fantastic . . . I'll be over in 10 minutes"

Urban Ranger wins the thread for not referring to the airtime minutes and texts that he pays money for as being "free", unlike the others going on about how much free stuff they pay for.

cell phone or any phone not that important unless im on call for work. If not on call they can leave a message or call back.
For the phone during a date, well when i did date i used it for help during a lame ass date. If the guy was boring me to tears id have the phone in my lap and hit a button that would call my friend. if i didnt say anything shed call me back and rescue me. Sneaky but affective.

I hqve no cell phone, and I don't intend to get one in the near future. I hate the idea of being accessible any time of the day. I might end up buying one as I'm looking for a job, but should it happen, I don't intend to give the number to any non-professional acquaintance (girlfriend and family included)

That's local dollars 1 UKP = 14.78 HKD.

So $90 is, hm, around 6.1 pounds.

What you mean is that Europe mandated one standard while the US government didn't get involved with standards so we have a standards war while you guys didn't. I'm fine with that because I pay $49.95 for 3000 minute per month with free unlimited night and weekend minutes while you guys pay more for arounf 500-1000 minutes. Gee, Americans don't use texting so much so we're "behind Europe". Maybe it's just that voice is so cheap we don't need to play kiddy games like texting!

I think you need to check UK prices I pay £15 (~$25) for 500 anytime, cross network minutes and 100 free texts. $50 for 3000 isn't that unusual here.

And yeh, in mobile take up, it's reported the US figures are 2 years behind Europe. Saying because it was invented there it's ahead there is silly. It's like saying England are better than Brazil at football because we invented it. We're not. Neither is the US. Japan is clearly well ahead of everyone, and in take up at least, Europe leads the US significantly

UK has 50 million mobiles (60 million pop'n), I think the European average is over 70%, expected to top 83% by 2007

I'm struggling to find modern figures this suggests that the US only has 166 million mobile subscribers, which is only about 56%.

Honey you're cute. Wrong but cute. Texting is not viewed as a kiddie medium here. Texting is viewed as a flexible way of sending short bursts of information. I want to arrange a night out at the pub? I send one text to multiple people instead of making a lot of phone calls. I watch the news and they tell you to text in a vote for one of their polls. BBC documentaries invite you to text in your opinions for instant feedback. I go to music festivals and I just text one number and they'll send me free updates for the course of the event on band line ups, alterations, rumours, and the best acts to see straight to my phone's inbox. I read a magazine and the adverts will invite me to text them for more information. They had a political debate with the Prime Minister where people could text in questions and get back answers. My friends go on holiday, they'll photo-text me pictures. Hell, some companies will photo-text porn direct to your phone. I text, my friends text, my parents text, my grandparents text. Britain and Japan a world leaders in the cultural aspects of text messaging and how its used.

I lived in North America for a big chunk of my life and I still go back to visit family. You are easily 2 years behind Europe in mobile phone penetration and usage. I mean, I read mobile phone magazines for fun and half the models released these days never get released in the USA. The Europe-Asia GSM market is massively larger and easier to distribute in than the American one.

Great post. I'll add to that the ability to text cheaply when abroad, much cheaper than making international calls. Even when I'm in the UK I send/recieve a handful of international texts - not to the US though, that seems to be a real problem. A lot of networks in the US don't seem to allow international texting.

The ability to send and receive texts is miles more useful than having a phone that you can carry with you.

2.4 billion texts were sent in the UK in december 2004. That's 40 per resident. I probably send about 150 a month on average, 5 a day.
