That's an awfully Victorian attitude to take. Sexual misconduct should be punished by having your future destroyed? No! If you screw around on your partner, you get punished by losing your partner and any support they may have given you. That's it. Cheating on someone isn't a crime in the civilized world. You don't destroy someone's future because they cheated on you. You dump them or you work things out. |
"Modern" morality requires a considerable degree of forebearance by the human heart. Its not clear to me that this works for everyone. For all the pain that traditional values have caused and still cause, Im not sure that the modern alternatives dont cause just as much. Some folks can relatively easily get over breakups, betrayals, own or parental divorces, etc. Some can't.
Judging by MRT's posted reactions, he just MIGHT be the sort of person who'd do better in an environment that encouraged delay of sexual activity by age, and to a more explicitly commited relationship (whether that has to be "marriage" I dont know) and one witha more traditional view toward the involvement of outsiders. I get the sense that MRT would, however, see such an environment as prudish, religious, and other things hed see as negative. While Im more inclined to respect the wisdom of individual choice than some, I wonder if we have created a culture that has overly stigmatized certain traditional kinds of behavior and so hurt many people (I would quickly note that we still overly stigmatize some nontraditional behaviors, notably homosexuality)

I would definitely agree with all that you said. Im not at the point right now where i think i should have a serious commited relationship. I need to focus on school and becoming a productive member of society.
I definitely agree with the assessment that i dont like prudish, uptight girls, but i think i might be changing on this. I had a girlfriend more than a year ago that was very unsexual etc and then i went to the oppisite extreme.

No, that is not the issue. They where never in a monogamous relationship. The two of them got the STD during a threesome. |
aint that the problem - in the absence of anything explicit, Ms Transylvania (or whatever) thought that once theyd brought in a "third" it was no big deal to have more "fun". Mr T, however didnt see it that way - despite what hed invited Ms Trans to do, he saw a boundary - now what cultural mores do for us is establish unstated rules, that serve when we cant or wont make our agreements explicit - but we dont HAVE cultural mores for this sort of thing - on the one hand the multiple activity violates our cultural norms, yet other cultural norms insist that anything engaged in by consenting adults is "ok". So the culture said they could do this, but didnt establish clear parameters. The lesson again, is that those who go into such borderline situations do so at their own emotional risk, especially when they are young. Mr T's reaction is NOT appropriate given this, yet its hard to fault him - our culture, with its winking support for doing what feels good, even when what feels good in the short run is so emotionally dangerous, is whats truely at fault.
