What's a "topt" univiversity??? A university that has a lot of funds to do whatever they like? Anyway that list is bollocks because the university of Ghent is listed before the university of Leuven here in Belgium and everyone knows it's the other way around. And Leuven being equally ranked with the université libre de bruxelles is just one big joke

Oh rubbish.

It's playing with toys and involves very little original or creative thought. Well it involves what computer scientists would call creative or original thought -- but it bores the hell out of everyone else.

If a contest doesn't include the usual suspects, it's a sign it's a poor contest or one not worth worrying about. It's as if Albania had won the World Cup.

You know, you should really choose your battles.

Asher is almost never exatly on the money, he always exagerates his side of the argument etc...
But you come fight a battle you know nothing about, and make a fool of yourself.

You have obviously no idea what such a contest is about, what it requires to solve these problems etc...

If you really want to have him up the a*s, then wait until he's bending down, he does it enough.
Right now you're just humping a tree.

I believe the origin of the term "sucks" or saying something is "sucking" comes from the army term "a sucking chest wound". One a person is shot in the chest so that his lung is punctured the open wound will make a sucking noise every time the person tries to breath since the hole is the quickest way in and out of the lungs. This sucking will also suck blood or dirty into the wounded lung thus causing infection or a slow lingering death as a person drownds in his own blood.

It was considered to be one of the worst wounds a man could get and it was thought better to be shot and killed then to recieve a sucking chest wound. Thus in slang people say "that sucks" to mean something that's really bad.

I don't see why it's rubbish. The rankings are consistent, Canadian universities hold their position while American universities keep dropping.

The reason is likely that there are five times as many universities now competing in it than in 1997 when IBM began sponsorship. Most of these new universities are from China, Russia, Eastern Europe...they're displacing the American universities from the list.

Your rationale that the US universities don't care or don't have the money for it are both nonsensical and pretty false on their face.

Agathon, idiot, what do you mean by original thoughts? Hey.. read the word SCIENCE.. CS as in Computer SCIENCE. The area is quite wide, and when it comes to programming and techniques and all there is to it, just to really grasp what it's truly about, it'll take a long long time and then you are just beginning. It doesnt' stop there either. There's masses of theory involved, design, implementation. The implementation part is only one part of programming. To figure out those, you need to be creative, yet logical and have a mind suitable for the subject. It bores people who can't hack it. Mostly people whose attention span is less than 5 seconds, and who never understood the value of mathematics, even to this date.

It IS creative. It IS problem solving. It IS designing and implementation. To you it means drinking lot of coke while drawing some sketchy UML diagrams, and then coding it together in one night. Right? That says more about you than it says about CS. AND the value of CS and it's contributions to the world are countless. Everything has some kind of processor now, embedded systems, how do you think they work? How do you think new technology works? How do you think ANYTHING would work today if it wasn't for CS. IF it was up to you, we'd be wearing speedos and starving because 'killing animals is wrong'. Right, there you go, why would I even debate this with cannibal communist, who is getting his racist gear on?

You see programming as typing, and then you have some kind of an applications and it does something. Wow.. very creative thoughts. The innovations and the developments of technology is rocketing through skies every day. Can you say the same for many other areas? Sure, they are important also, but as for science, CS brings you the tools to DO science, to research, to come up with better solutions, it gives you the services you use today, for example Apolyton to begin with and many others, like banks, grocery stores and their systems. CS is POWER, it's the past, present and the future where as philosophy is what? Waste of time.

Actually, philosophy in today's world can still be important in shaping collective mentalities (many elements of today's western collective mentalities have been first thought by trailblazing philosphers) although philosophy doesn't have the monopoly in this field.

Philosophy has also a remote usefulness in the field of social sciences, because their speculations can bring interesting ideas that could give an overall direction to actual researchers.

Yeah. so? Day dreaming. It's cool, don't get me wrong. But face value is what? Day dreaming. CS can shape peoples minds, collective minds even more, and philosophy has to start using tools CS has given the world, to spread their own word. Collective mentalities. Yes. Let's give up philosophy and bring out the weed, because it has more credentials being a real substance.

What I described in the post above: a significant contribution in the collective mentalities (often, that which originated in philosophers' minds will be in everybody's brain a few generations later). For example, philosophy is the main reason why we live in societies that give you a freedom of speech, without which the Intenrnet would be meaningless.

Also, Philosphy has some minor academic use in the field of human sciences.

Sure. No problemo. And Mud Throwing made our ancestors warmer and were the first steps to society. Mudding the huts that is. The Art Of Lactating was also good, giving nutrition to babies. What I'm saying is, it's not totally irrelevant, but compare to CS and what's happening right now, it's laughable suggestion that it would actually compete in contributions now.

Philosophers haven't come up with anything new in ages. Except with conservatives with conscience. That card is played already.

Kid, sure.. why not. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, or hasn't given anything to anyone. I'm saying, right now and in the future, CS is where it's at, when talkinga bout contributions to the world. To deny this is to die without honour.

Got spare money?

I'm with Asher and Pekka here .

Look at it this way - when philosophers are of the right kind , they get out of the way of the scientists and technicians , and let them do the job of advancing science and civilisation . When they are bad , they hinder progress . Thus , the effects philosophers have had on society have , for the most part , been usually negative , thanks to them giving intellectual credence to junk .

Computer scientists , on the other hand , have enhanced the quality of human life tremendoucly almost everywhere .

Another important point is the assumption that "people skills" are some sarcosanct value , never to be questioned . It is not a doctor with "people skills" who saves lives - it is one who is technically competent . **How would you feel about driving a car designed by a team of people chosen for "people skills" , versus one designed by nerds/geeks/(negative asocial stereotype) who were geniuses in car design ?

I'd rather have a person who has no "people skills" , but gets the job done , done well , and done well on time when asked , than a person with great "people skills" but no ( or very little , or even just average ) ability . **If your life depended on it , wouldn't you ?

A telling case in point is this discussion itself - you can have it without philosphers ( though then the topic would not have come up ) , but not without the computer scientists who designed the systems that made it possible .

The two "**" mark two questions , the answers to which will demonstrate the credibility of my opponents' arguments to us and the rest of the readers of this thread . If unanswered , the meaning will be clear - my opponents have no anser to give , and thus do not have much of a case , either .

And though I am not a native English speaker , and I do make the occasional typing mistake , I at least try to use the language correctly . This coming from a science student in high school . And I thought philosophy taught you to be ( at the very least ) careful in your wording and precise about the uses of words . I think you need to learn some grammar - from a highschooler .

People skills are still important, but it largely depends on your role on the team. Software development, at least, is a team process. You need to be able to work well and communicate well with others. "Primadonna Programmers" are useful only at the lowest level of the hierarchy, when they're given a task and that's it.

As for English...in my experience, computer science majors are unusually good at English. I think it relates to having to "get it right the first time" with syntax and structure in a program, and it translates from a language like C++ to a language like English.

Who thinks that?

Computer Science is more about playing with gadgets.

Think about that next time you're in a car accident and your car is that much safer than they were 30 years ago, or the next time you go to the bank to withdraw money, or the next time you go to the doctor and get prescribed some medication...

These "gadgets" have become part of everyday life for regular people, and essential tools to furthering scientific understanding in virtually every field.
