My mother once told me I'm 1/16th indian. If I can prove it they'll definately give me a job at the local indian casino. Since my wife and father in law both work there they are hesitant to hire me. These jobs are good wampum and have excellent benefits. So, is there a genetic test I can take to prove my heretige?
If so, how would one go about it?

You can get a program to help you start doing your family geneology or hire someone to do it. It's gonna cost you either way. Alternatively, go to your local library when you get back from the Phils and get a book or two on geneology and learn how to look up that info yourself, but it's gonna take a while. One of the advantages the programs have is instant access to a lot of county, state, and federal records.
Also check out some geneology forums online. It's just possible one of your relatives has already done some or all of the work. For example, I found a family tree of one part of my family online.
Also, talk to the local tribe. They may be able to help, or may give you some info that would let you drop it, for example if you have to be a member of their tribe, instead of just any Indian.

If he was "pure" blood, then you're 1/8th, and eligible for tribal membership if you can prove it. In addition to being able to work on the Rez, you're also eligible for all sorts of Federal benefits, provided you're a member of a recongized nation.
quote: My family on my mother's side keeps pretty good records of their family history. But they were a little ashamed of the Indian (native american) blood in their family back in those days. People were pretty racist back then. |
Bunnygrrl's grandmother used to say she was half Indian (other half being Black), and so BG thought she was 1/8th Indian. As I kept pressing her for info, so she could get Federal scholarships, we discovered that really she (her grandmother) was half white, but was ashamed of being half white and so said her folks were both half Indian. Interestingly, a LOT of Black people have significant amounts of Indian ancestry. Lotta race-mixing between Indians and Blacks in the South.

not that I have any desire to work on the reservation or a casino. Indian casinos are not good for employees. Everyone thinks Indians are getting rich with this tribal gaming. But only a couple top dogs (many of them white) are getting rich. The employees are dirt poor. Yes you can say the same thing about american casinos. But americans get better benefits than native americans. And slightly higher wages.
Why would I want to work for a crappy Indian casino when I can work for a crappy Las Vegas casino? . And I have worked for a Las Vegas casino. I had good benefits, but I hate casinos. I doubt I'll work for one again.
