I did it in another thread on the matter. It might have been the last one of these. Basically the term football comes from England to describe any game played on foot rather than on horseback. Back in the mid 1800s, there were a ton of different football games, a kicking game, a dribbling game, and a pick it up and run with it game were ALL called football (with no real prefexes). That changed when the sports started to get organized. The English football association codified the rules to make football the kicking game. Well a few clubs weren't fond and had their own league of rugby football (named after the school the rules came from IIRC).

So you have association football and rugby football. Association Football (from the Football Association) becomes soccer (asSOCiation Football). Rugby football (colloquially called rugger at the time) was the precursor for American football and Australian rules football, both which have the same running with the ball. The sport of rugby, to this day, is officially 'rugby football'.

So basically people who say that soccer is an incorrect name for the sport are being incredibly ignorant about its history.

Some more reading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football

It's not incorrect, but it's not recognised as being the name for the sport in a VAST majority of nations. Only 5 FIFA nations (IIRC) call it "soccer"... so in the 98% of the rest of countries, soccer is not recognised as the name of the sport. In fact not even local language derivatives are.

Again, it's not incorrect, but it's not the common name for it.

Woohoo, what an ending for a season. West Brom came from the last in the league to clinch a spot. Though Norwich losing to Fullham 6-0 is rather shocking.

'survival sunday' was awesome, every team in the bottom four was safe at some point this afternoon

watched the norwich game, they got well and truly spanked, but if a couple of questionable decisions early on hadn't gone against them, things could have been very different. saints were the same **** they've been all season and i'm not sorry to see them go down. palace did their usual 'let in a rubbish goal in the last few minutes' trick to go down. baggies did well to win, though in all fairness i doubt pompey pressed them too hard after they scored the first goal.

in other news man city missed out on europe thanks to robbie fowler missing a last minute penalty and the mighty arsenal kept up their record of not drawing a last day game in the prem by losing 2-1 to birmingham, via an emile heskey goal for ****s sake!

Palace.

I found it amusing that Everton came in at 4th despite having a negative goal difference (thanks to Arsenal).

By the time they lost to Arsenal they had already secured 4th spot, Liverpool were too far behind to catch up.

actually, now i think israel might beat Ireland, because Keane is out.

Switzerland 6 3 3 0 14 3 12 11
Israel 7 2 5 0 9 6 10 3
France 6 2 4 0 5 1 9 4
Ireland 6 2 3 1 7 3 9 4

then all israel needs to do is lose to switzerland (most likely will happen) and then switzerland has the inside track to qualifying

Oh come on... You can watch as much NFL as you like! It's a great sport (maybe).

Of course we could settle with a compromise by calling it NFL Football and FIFA Football and UEFA Football if you are talking about Europe only or CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL,.... whatever games exist with the name Football.

Or I shall continue spreading the word that whatever historic reason you might come up with.. it's still a game where an egg-shaped something is carried to the other side

Or you can just admit how wrong you were . Football is just as valid a name for the NFL as FIFA's according to the historical basis of the names. And the oval ball is something common to all forms of rugby football, whether played in England, Australia, or whereever.

"NFL Football" and "FIFA Football" are redundant. Federation International Football Association Football and National Football League Football is silly.

You could have 'football' in your thread title, but don't say I didn't warn you when Americans come in and dispute the term or Sava comes back and posts desktop sized pictures of Chicago Bears.

Pardonezmoi, but where did I said I care about the historical background.. my careful analysis showed that based on the appearence of both games one has more rights to deserve the name football than the other and if historically BOTH have the same rights, than that's still 2:1 for teh real football

Come on... Did you never send an SMS Message? A Short Message Service Message? Or did you play FIFA Soccer? Maybe not, at least you have heard them and they don't sound strange.. so...

Haven't you considered that odd? Why don't you call it just an SMS. It's redundant and shouldn't be used.

This would go for Tennis, Handball, Basketball, Golf,... the only thing excluded would probably be Polo as this is played on a horse (and every sport without a ball)

Still I think my analysis was not understood... I am thinking about repeating it!

Because just an SMS is still wrong. You don't _send_ a Short Message Service, you just send a short message and therefor it would have to be called sending a SM. You can say I use SMS to send you a SM.
As you can see, this is getting us nowhere... forget about the oddity.

Exactly... thereby indicating your 'analysis' is flawed. It depends on what people consider by 'foot' (whether kicking or on foot) or ball (sphere or any ball).

It depends on an already made up mind.

Then go ahead and say you sent an SM by using an SMS... it's better not to be redundant.
