Often times the Christian/Western idea of self-control can turn into a self-defeating prison of despair.

Stoicism is a fine philosophy. My Dad's doctor was telling me that they now do something like this and it is called "cognitive therapy". I think that is smart as a lot of the time people actually have real problems that are about the way the world is, not about them.

Of course our culture seems to regard anyone who is not a shallow bubbly naive optimist as insane, but there you go.

WOW

I didn't know there was a link between cognitive therapy and Stoicism. It would be nice if cognitive therapy was taught in our schools, I think there's alot of silly self-defeating world views that people develop.

If you ever watch any American reality dating shows, you'll see this toxic mindset in action.

Yup.

The thing is that most of the naive bubbliness is just on the surface. And it ends up weighing people down inside.

Well, I don't know much about the former myself, but I was explaining Stoicism to the Doctor and he was astonished at the similarities.

We should hit it more. When you're hitting it, even when you feel bad it's all good.

I see that the connection is very strong. CT also seems to move towards the idea that bad emotions are either a kind of false belief or are caused by false beliefs – that's almost exactly the Stoic view (although they sometimes say all emotions are bad, even though they don't really mean that).

For celebrity endoresments, I'd say Stoicism gets high marks, being championed by Seneca and Marcus Aurelius. I didn't know that until I just looked it up.

Seneca is naughty though. He consistently brings in other philosophies, which would have angered Zeno and Chrysippus had they lived to see it. I haven't read much of Seneca or Aurelius – it is a bit too modern and trendy for me. Even the Old Stoics are a bit new compared to the stuff I like.

An interesting link I just ran across about the link between Type 2 Diabetes (the type found in young adults) and depression. Since you mentioned both depression and diabetes I thought this article might interet you.

Also do you like music? If so I suggest you pick up The Flamming Lips: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots as that CD is like lyrical happiness. It's great stuff.

Not bad - sadly (actually, fortunately as it means I'm not an overweight so and so ) I have type 1 diabetes, not type 2, and it was diagnosed long before depression. Incidently, its not straightforward depression in my case but blablahblah....yeah, I stopped listening too.

I heard something by The Flaming Lips (called fight test I think....not sure) ages ago and it made me want to eat my own eye balls - so I may give it a miss.

I think it depends - losing part of your liver isnt a prob as it grows back I know, but apparently mine is inflamed and scarred.

The check ups are about enzymes or something. Not that I wasn't paying attention or anything.....Essentially I don't know the extent of damage as yet, or how quickly it will develop. But alcohol etc are definite no nos in my case for the time being.

I'm not trolling. Drunk sluts = evil people = deserve to die. It's that simple

Coming in here and whining about the results of your own irresponsibility doesn't automatically reap you sympathy.

Not drinking in the future

I wasn't expecting sympathy. I said, several times, how stupid I was and stated that was half the reason I was posting in the first place. I'm not a drunkard, or a slut. Sexual promiscuity has **** all to do with my liver anyway.

My comments about alcohol were an attempt to try and make light of the situation. If you cannot see that, then I truly pity you.

I probably do deserve to die. The fact I tried to, repeatedly, surely indicates I felt like that? I don't want to be a burden on the health service. I don't want to be a drain on those I love.

But, like it or not, I've had some bad news and wanted an outlet for it here as I don't want to let anyone in RL know how dumb I've been.

You're goal isn't very relevant here, VJ. Reinforcing a suicidal person's lack of self esteem ( which IS misplaced ) on purpose is some of the most bone-headed ( in the best case) behavior possible.

No. You just shat on someone who was feeling miserable, scared and vulnerable. This place has it's share of inappropriate behaviour and most posters do it at sometime or other, but I can't remember anyone being a more despicable shithead than you've been in this thread. Both your short-lived relationship with Drogue and your (old, changed like 5 minutes ago) signature disagree. It'd be a good thing if you wouldn't be either one in the future, and boldly saying so is a nice first step.

My signature actually explicitly said 'I am not a slut'. And I changed it after the general election, not 5 minutes ago.

As for the ****ing crap about an ex, the relationship lasted over a year, and I am ****ing sick of all his mad internet cronies treating me like a worthless whore because I didnt want to spend the rest of my life trapped in a relationship that was making me ****ing miserable.

(and I didn't say I was going to kill myself because I had liver problems. The opposite in fact. You are the one who said I deserved to die because of my actions)
