I didn't like this. I very much prefer the way it was done in Civ III, showing the actual number of turns needed for growth and production.
If this is the new way, then I'll be left thinking: "hmm, this blue bar is almost full, does this mean 1 turn or 2 turns to go?". Then I'll have to check the advisor (or chart, or whatever) to be sure.
I know these are beta screenshots, so I hope they'll rethink this new way to show production and growth.

Good article/interview.
The graphics on the screenshots look considerably better than what has been in magazine previews, so those were placeholders after all. On the Novgorod screenshot, it's probably zoomed in... at least I hope.
The planet screenshot looks good. An updated Civ1 map indeed . However, the orange progress bar which shows how close a city is to growing (best noticable on Moscow) should also have the exact number of turns, as that helps with planning.
Cities connected by a river are considered connected for trade purposes . In ancient times, obviously, rivers were of utmost importance trade wise, I'm glad they're adding that.

No worries on the game being too fast paced. Besides, as Soren said here, custom paces are possible.
And great news about Soren working on the AI now. I want this game polished. I want Soren to have enough time to do whatever he wants with the AI, and then a good beta testing phase that would ensure the game has no horrendeous bugs when released.
Overall - a big, resounding .

Does anybody know what the darker terrain is? tundra? Also did anyone catch that on the 2kgames feature list is mentions culturally unique units.
"Civ IV comes to life! - Beautiful 3D world with dozens of fully animated units (including culturally unique units), and totally customizable armies. Cities and wonders will appear on the map. Wonder movies are back! "

The round map is great. I hope we get a more zoomed out picture soon that shows the whole sphere. Right now it looks like an oval, but I love it!
What I'm curious about is cities. In Novgorod in the first screen I don't see anything, just the name. In St. Petersburg we just have the city walls and some sort of odd shadow. I know it's intended that cities should be WSIWYG in the sense that improvments and wonders are shown on the map, so perhaps Novgorod just hasn't built anything yet?
I'd like to see houses and other little urban graphics on cities, so that viewing the map with city names and displays turned off doesn't leave out little outposts without anything built in them yet.
