Let's face it, the Greeks loved being part of the Empire until the late 18th Century. The Ottoman navy was largely manned by Greeks. Greeks were so loyal they were appointed as the Voivodes of Wallachia and Moldavia. Heck, Osman's army was more than half Greek, way back in the very begining.

The British Museum is one of the greatest places of the world, it is truly awe-inspiring how much stuff they have there. The Elgin Marbles is a key part of their historical exhibits, they should be kept there.

I didn't find the Elgin Marbles to remotely be the crux of the BM's exhibitions. The Egyptian and ancient middle eastern sections are far more compelling. I don't think returning the marbles would be a big loss in and of itself.

The precedent, however, is what I don't like. It could lead to the BM having to return pretty much its entire collection, should the folks inhabiting the current areas decide to lay claim to the items (however much a stretch it is to claim the artifacts are "theirs").

I say, the BM should just promise that, going forward, no artifacts would be accepted to their collection that are stolen from other countries. As for the rest--finder's keepers. Nyah-nyah.

The fear of snowball effect is what the BM is afraid to a large extend, I'm sure.

However I don't know how it has managed to put itself in that position whereas Louvre is doing just fine with as many if not more artifacts.
Must be something wrong with the way they deal with things.
Or it's just because of Melina Mercouri's "craziness" that that subject has evolved to this.
Or maybe the Louvre didn't steal?
