Peak Oil is today. What do we do? Inflate your Upload Space

This thread isn't for debating whether or not Peak Oil will occur, but what to do after it occurs. Assume that Oil production starts to decrease and the market does not react to the increasing prices. What do we do?

Hybrids aren't that much more expensive. $2k - $3k for a new vehicle. Besides, as more people buy hybrids, the cost of the electric portion of the hybrid will go way down.

Plug-in hybrids would make a lot of sense, since that would switch most vehicles at most times from oil-based fuels to coal.

I wish they would make the hybrids more attractive. Most of them look like wimpy euro cars.

You do know the wimpy euro(Japaneses) cars are getting more popular in the US because of higher oil prices. You can't stop evolution.

I'm really talking about the short run, where there isn't enough capacity to build that many hybrids and the price of oil has skyrocketed. How do we get to the point where hybrids are mass produced?

I was going to say!

The effect will be dramatic but not instantaneous... I'd guess around 1-2 years, during which time we could be ok if we pulled our proverbial fingers out now, which we wont.

We'll have several years to work it out. Plenty of time for plug-in hybrids to reach mass production. The limiting factor is how fast we can build new base electricity generation capacity.

Urmmmm, no. The limiting factor is the amount of oil. Whatever we do will take oil. Which means that we have to take it from somewhere it is currently being used. That will cause massive problems with the financial markets if they haven't already collapsed, which they probably will have.

Trolling is way too easy here.

I don't have a problem with smaller cars (I drive a small car) I just want some better looking ones. The hybrids are almost all pathetic.

Take it from transportation. Even considering peak oil, production does not fall very quickly. As long as you don't dawdle, you would have plenty of time to make the switch.

A decline is a decline. In order to produce more you need more resources or you need to divert them. Since we won't have more oil we will need to divert oil use from somewhere else.

Very boringly traditional, but coal liquefaction becomes profitable at about $35/barrel, and there is still plenty of coal. So if oil prices keep rising or stay at $50 as they are now people will just use coal liquefaction, which should ensure that oil prices never rise much above $50.

Since that argument seems to hold, I am a bit puzzled about why those people who talk about running out of oil doesn't take it into account.

No, just use less of it in transportation. Plug-in hybrids will reduce use of petroleum-based fuels.

Not much of a plan DanS. What about the economy? Less transportation obviously means less economic production.

This discussion is becoming frustrating. Plug-in hybrids would allow the same or more transportation with a decreasing supply of petroleum.
