Very boringly traditional, but coal liquefaction becomes profitable at about $35/barrel, and there is still plenty of coal. So if oil prices keep rising or stay at $50 as they are now people will just use coal liquefaction, which should ensure that oil prices never rise much above $50.
Since that argument seems to hold, I am a bit puzzled about why those people who talk about running out of oil doesn't take it into account.
