Steve Jobs: Drop out of college, just like I did! Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0...tw=wn_tophead_6

quote:
Live, Jobs Tells Stanford Grads

PALO ALTO, California -- Steve Jobs told Stanford University graduates Sunday that dropping out of college was one of the best decisions he ever made because it forced him to be innovative -- even when it came to finding enough money for dinner.

In an unusually candid commencement speech, Apple Computer's CEO also told the almost 5,000 graduates that his bout with a rare form of pancreatic cancer reemphasized the need to live each day to the fullest.

"Your time is limited so don't let it be wasted living someone else's life," Jobs said to a packed stadium of graduates, alumni and family.

Jobs, wearing sandals and jeans under his robe, was treated like a rock star by the students, in large part due to the surge in popularity of Apple's iPod digital music player.

A group of students wore iPod mini costumes over their robes and several shouted, "Steve, hire me!"

Jobs, 50, said he attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon but dropped out after only eight months because it was too expensive for his working-class family. He said his real education started when he "dropped in" on whatever classes interested him -- including calligraphy.

Jobs said he lived off 5-cent soda recycling deposits and free food offered by Hare Krishnas while taking classes.

He told the graduates that few friends could see the value of learning calligraphy at the time but that painstaking attention to detail -- including mastering different "fonts" -- was what set Macintosh apart from its competitors.

"If I had never dropped out I might never have dropped in on that calligraphy," Jobs said.

Jobs also recounted founding Apple in his parent's basement and his tough times after being forced out of the company he founded when he was only 30.
"I was a very public failure and I even thought about running away from the valley," Jobs said.

Instead, he founded Pixar Studios, which has released enormously popular films such as Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

"It was awful tasting medicine but I guess the patient needed it," Jobs said.

When he was diagnosed with cancer, Jobs said his doctor told him he only had three-to-six months to live. He later found out he had a rare, treatable form of the disease -- but he still learned a tough lesson.

"Remembering you are going to die is the best way to avoid the fear that you have something to lose," he said.

Before the ceremony, a plane rented by the Computer TakeBack Campaign, an environmental group, flew over the stadium with a banner that read: "Steve, don't be a mini player -- recycle all e-waste." The group is prodding Apple to improve its efforts to recycle obsolete electronics.

The man remains a tool, whose followers are only people who don't see him and his company for what it is.

I see him as successful as I see the founder of Heaven's Gate. They both made lots of money based on cultism, anyway.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

This speech makes me glad it wasnt around when i was putting my self thru nursing school working 40 plus hours a week raising 3 kids on my own. After 32 hours of school then 40 hours of work to go home and take care of my children i would have dropped out and stayed in the low paying job i had.

This is why personal advice is only usefull if trully universal.

I certainly agree that there are many people for whom college is NOT the option they should take. This is why I wish the US education system gave kids more choices earlier. I mean, so many kids want to be doctors, so few think about being nurses, yet we need nurses and have lots of extra specialists. So many people who want to go into medicine could be very happy nursing, and then we would help solve the nursing crisis, but the emphasis is on getting the highest possible earning job.

For some people college and a liberal education is exactly what they need. Not for all. That is what Jobs needed to say, thought he does not seem to have said it.

I also mentioned I still found it painful to use.

And I was mostly appreciating their small-scale/closed system operations because it allows them to do some things first.

Has nothing to do with Jobs himself, but the fact that his toolishness has prevented Mac from becoming larger than it is.

I also am pretty sure Jobs had next to nothing to do with the design of the BSD kernel. For what it's worth, I've since found out just how badly Apple ****ed up the kernel (server tests show it being abysmally slow).

De Nile ain't just a river in Egypt.

That was a pretty slick evasion - thinking of going into politics, or just sticking with executive management.

I don't see the self-pwnage.

The whole premise of the write-up is Apple is a small player that can outmanuever the big boys, allowing them to do some more experimental things. The good things eventually trickle down to the PC in a more refined, useful way.

It has nothing to do with Steve Jobs being a tool. He still is one -- in fact, that's why Apple is the small player in the first place.

FTR Jobs is by all accounts a domineering *******. I imagine that is required for a person in his position.

But he's had numerous hits. Apple (he was the guy who made it into a business), the mac (mostly down to his relentless perfectionism), Pixar (he kept hanging on to it because they had good people and he thought it would eventually pan out) and the iPod (which is again down to his relentless pushing of employees and outrageous demands). That's a pretty good record.

He has had failures like the Cube and NeXT (but the latter is a success because it allowed him to take over Apple and make them pay him to do it).

My main problem with that post was overestimating people's intelligence in figuring out the point of the article, even though it was explicitly stated 3 times that the whole point was Apple was a small company...

I am also a college dropout and damn proud. I love Steve Jobs, and am glad he had the balls to stand up and express some pride in the fact he dropped out instead of running away from it like others.

Don't wait for some institution to grant you a life and career, do it your own damn self. Trust me, you'll be much happier.

Everyone who drops out of school has the same opinion that Ozzy has. Unfortunately most of them either get spit out the bottom of the porn industry, or end up in prison or on welfare. Steve Jobs had an idea before quiting school. That's the difference between just quiting, which is incredibly stupid.
