I like them, every team knows that they need a really big army for a war with us. In the ancient Age, the UU is like the hoplit a powerfull defender and gets us to the middle age if we are able to use it.
Other think is that we can build the UU from the start and it costs only 10 shields. So we can use them like the zulu-UU, build ten of them and every other team will have big problems to save their roads/mines.

Having a "warrior" with greater defenses helps to survive poping a barb hut, especially if that hut is close to someone else (and a ways away from you) and you want the hut before you make contact. If you die, you have to send someone else to make that contact, which takes time (and possibly a change in production to get that unit to send).
Having a "cheap" Spearman means that you can build 2 for the price of 1 for every one else. Which, if we have a fairly high REX rate, we will need units to escort and units to explore and units to Garrison citys and help with the happiness (remember, we will be emporer difficulty, so only 1 free content pop per city).
The drawback, is that we can't build regular warriors, but will be able to build Swordsmen, with IW and Iron connected. If anything, that would save us the upgrade costs for those units and we can use the money for other things (or not worry so much about money at the begining).
Another Drawback is having someone trigger our GA early, but that will be a job for the FAM to help prevent.
