I just watched a swedish documentary on danish TV about teenagers' surfing habits with respect to porn, and how people that age are affected by it...
It also covered tha gap between parents' and their teenagers' knowledge about the Internet (what's out there and how you access it)... The parents in the program were at an enormous disadvantage; some didn't even know how to use computers at all...
i) Do you think that it's representative in general (ie that most parents are outsmarted by their children regarding computers and the Internet)?
ii) Do you think it is true when it comes to Apolytoners and their children (teenagers)?
iii) Do you think it's the fate of all older generations (past, current and future) to lag behind the younger ones when it comes to technological development and new gadgets? (I believe it was Douglas Adams who said that after 35 all innovations are completely incomprehensible)

there are some old people, who are at least decent
and I would say that there are some 30 year olds and 40 year olds, who I have no advantage of whatsoever
and I am more tech savy then most my age
I think that it depends on the person
maybe it will be true that the best young person, will always be between then the best older one
and that the average younger person will be more savvy then the average older person
but saying that older people just can't get it is definitely wrong, same with saying that young people do get it...

i) eventually yes but not for kids below teen if you're computer literate
ii) no, because it depends on the level of parental supervision and knowledge
iii) yes and no - you get a level of comfort with technology but that doesn't mean you are stuck in a time warp - I have a mobile phone but I don't know how to text because I don't see a need for it. I could learn. Texting did however come in after I turned 35 .......
My oldest boy now goes on the internet to a site called mini-clip where he meets his friends to do medieval quests and stuff - I check the comp history to make sure he's not going elsewhere. I have ways to check even if the history is deleted.
I also set the google search to strict filtering, which is really quite effective for porn screening.
Their own computer is not online - I would have real difficulty with that.
I worry a lot about them being expose to porn because my friennds and I found some porn at quite a young age and it had very negative effects I think in terms of our personal growth.

Well... I would guess that people active here are more experienced with the Internet than the average (but perhaps more so 5 or 6 years ago?)... But then again, so are probably the young...

Sex isn't the ugly side of life. It is a beautiful thing. People think it's dirty because when they're kids they are hidden from it.
But AH has a point. Most sex on the internet is pretty ugly.

Most definitely. You can clearly see that the majority of IT specialists are young guys, in their early twenties mostly. Likewise, it's not uncommon for 14-20 year olds to be quite comfortable with computers. And in the same way, most 40 year olds are not quite comfortable with computers, either because they don't like them, haven't taken the time to learn them, etc. So yes, it's very representative and very true.

I don't think that Apolytoners differ on this one, although they differ on a lot of things .

Depends on the persons. I do know some people who are over 60 and keep up with the latest in techs and gadgets; there are excellent tech experts of that age as well. However for the most part, the older generation is indeed unwilling to use new technology, especially the more complex ones. Ask 50 year olds why they are not good with computers. Mostly, they'll say they don't want to bother.

In my case I'm in my forties, have been a geek since my teen years, have stayed mostly up to date on the technology if not the actual changes themselves, i.e. I don't do my programming in Java but I still program.
It all depends on your attitude, if you listen to your children and stay interested in what they do, and finally if you are willing to play the proper role of a parent, which includes the fact that ignorance is anything but bliss. I've raised someone else's teens, and they came to my wedding, so I speak from personal experience.
The porn bit I'm somewhat mixed up about. I was raised by a fundamentalist Roman Catholic father who was very sexually repressed (luckily for me my mother was not quite so screwed up). A little porn might have helped my appalling ignorance the first time I had sex, then again she was experienced, and I wanted to marry her, so it worked out pretty well anyway.
However, when my wife was in her last trimeter a couple of years ago, I went online for porn for the first time. She had become largely incapable of sex, a hundred pound women with an eight pound baby is both too naseous and too stuffed with the child for much of anything. I talked to her about it, and she was fine with it.
I was looking for people having a good time when having sex. Well, that is when I discovered about the newish trends in porn that includes the subjugation of the women. There has always been that kind of porn, but it had been a sort of the dirty backwater. Instead it's highly prevalent in online porn, and much of it is quite revolting. My wife found it amusing, because I wanted to see couples enjoying having sex together, and that is very much the exception in the online porn industry. She figured I spent more time finding online porn that I found sexy than I actually spent taking advantage of it. She asked me to figure it out, and I found less the 1% of the online porn actually sexy and good enough for repeat veiwing. :frown:
