How are you preparing for 'Peak Oil' / The coming oil crisis Full PM-box? Change here!

Its coming. In our lifetime and very soon. How will you react? How do you think Civilization will react? How can we prevent it?

I feel we will enter a dark age in which automobiles are worthless and people are still paying them. Lights will go out. Only the military and the wealthy will have fuel. Countries will fight wars over remaining reserves. I will probably walk to work.

Can we prevent it? Not really. Its too late. Even alternative fuel sources costs gazillion barrels of fuel to make (Hybrid Cars, Solar Panels). And we will still run out of oil.

Oil is something I dont think we can live without.

Predicting impending tragedy due to rising oil prices is not accurate.

Lots of oil left. Shale and "sand oil" are in abundant supply (especially in Canada) and we have lots and lots of coal in the US.

Electric cars are a reality - with some limitations in speed and distance with today's technology. They will improve.

It is true that hydrogen cars require more energy to produce the hydrogen than the net savings of energy the car would produce.

BTW: A 14.5 billion dollar energy just passed the House with the Senate expected to pass it tomorrow:

This from CNN.com:

quote:
Environmental and consumer groups criticized the legislation as a giveaway to an industry enjoying record profits with crude oil prices near $60 a barrel, while spending little on ways to curb demand or encourage renewable energy.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

OMG, he´s back again!!

Two scenarios spring to mind. The dark one in your op and a much lighter one filled with eco-fuel cars, wind powered highway catamarans and happy children.

Of course, the latter would mean that humanity would actually make a lifestyle turn for the better; throwing away 300 years of utter neglect for the planet. I´d say humanity is doomed. Mad Max here we come!

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I think that mankind would readily adapt by using non-oil technologies. There would be a few years of serious economic crisis, but after that, we'd use non-oil-conduming energy sources.

1. We have the technology to make nuke plants which create massive electricity. The only reason why oil is still used in electricity is not technological, it's economical.
2. We already have the know-how for plenty of alternate fuel sources for cars. Many of these fuels come from agriculture of all things. After a while, such cars will be generic.
3. Oil is used as a construction material, especially for plastics. But if we stop using oil as an energy source, oil reserves won't be so stale that we have nothing to make our plastics anymore.

Personally, I don't drive, and I live in a country whose energy come mostly from nuke plants. There is quite some infrastructure for alternate fuel sources in place already. Overall, I think the peak oil crisis will have a very limited impact on my daily life.

Oil crisis ? Well, recently new surveys say that we (Denmark) will be selfsupplied to 2025 and since I'll be .. never mind - story is that 20 years ago it was claimed that we would run out of oil for approx 10 years ago.

Oil wells noone would dare to drill for five years ago are worth drilling now and new technology are able to suck up much more oil from current/obsolete drillings, so I guess that we have to wait to 2080-90 before it might start to hurt.

Its the new lunatic conspiracy theory invented by those that don't understand how supply and demand work and think that since we are so beholding to oil that is how it always will be and always has to be.

There will be no 'dark ages'. There is plenty of fuel out there. If oil gets to be too expensive, we'll do something else.

Hmm still lots of places to explore and many more to produce. There are tons and tons of fields that were abandoned when oil was 12-15 bucks that are starting to make sense re-enter. Same with the oil sands-- reserves there are estimated as being larger than Saudi Arabia's , its just a lot more expensive to produce.

As an oil exporter, Canada stands to do well economically and as someone that works in the industry, I can tell you that predictions of "running out" in my lifetime are absurd. Heck we are just STARTING to explore many of the basins with deeper water depths.

Funny thing is that when a well is declared dry, people thinks that all oil is pumepd up. That may be true for some sites, but f.ex. the wells in the nordic sea was said to be "dry" when 10 % of the oil was pumped up - new tech has changed this to 20 % wich menas that there still are lots of oil, you just have to figure out how to get it.

Oh, some may claim that the skyrocketing of oil prices will be the doom of civlisation - I don't belive that - it will only make more oilfields worth exploring. The same rise in oil prices will at the same time make other energy sources profitable, so no, our current civlisation will not die in lack of enegy.

yup-- it all tepends on the porosity of the sandstone in which the oil is trapped and the premiability of the oil. Early recovery is easier since most reservoris will have some overpressure which means it will flow naturally (think of a juice box that you squeeze hard before puncturing with a straw)-- But after the initial days you usually require water or gas injection to push out the oil. And even with the best planned injection schemes you often get water breakthrough ( you are pumping the water you inject as the oil has been pushed to other parts of the structure)-- A new well or a recompletion to terminate elsewhere in the structure might allow a LOT of additional production

The provincial government gets tons of money from it. The Federal government doesn't.

Every $1 increase in oil prices means $65M in royalties. Not to mention corporate tax on those oil companies.

Every $0.10 increase in natural gas means $110M more in royalties for Alberta...
