Spyware and viruses are no problem for me and Windows is anything but a poorly designed UI. Take a look at Gnome to see a poorly designed UI and the graphics are okay in windows. In fact I find Mac OS X's "Design everywhere" much uglier and especially the brushed metal look which is absolutely disgusting. I am using the classic windows theme and I am fine with it. An OS doesn't need to look beautiful, it needs to look consistent and make you want to work with it. By that Mac OS 9 had the best graphics: simple, effective and nothing that distracts.

Windows Classic theme

Works just as well for Eng/Jap/Kor/De in Windows as it does for me in OS X.

Ming's ibook must have been broken or had something done to it. My wife can't screw up an ibook, which is the hardest test for a computer imaginable.

I dunno about iBooks, but my Cube is a hair's breadth less stable than my Windows box, and as stable as my Linux box (which has bad RAM). :shrugs: Your mileage may vary, but I have no trouble with being able to crash any of my OSes.

And considering that it is UNIX/Linux servers that are used in a large number of mission-critical services , why doesn't anybody target them ?

Actually, they are targeted, with alarming frequency. It's just the people who administer them tend to be of higher caliber, so the damage and vulnerabilities may not be as far-reaching.

But okay, I know what you mean and ofc you are right. Though you have to admit, you need the simple tasks 99% of the time and the hard tasks 1%.

Ata, I agree with you on simplicity and elegance of the UI. It's why I prefer Fluxbox, like I mentioned earlier--and honestly, I prefer the clean, minimalist white plastic environment of OS X pre-10.3; I'm not a fan of this brushed metal bullshit. Brushed metal looks nice on tangible things, like my desk and my keyboard or chair, but not on my computer screen's windows.

As far as making difficult tasks... Just because you make simple things much easier doesn't mean you should endeavour to make difficult tasks almost impossible to find--I have that issue with OS X, because it's been a few months now, and I'm still finding it difficult to mess around with the fundamentals, whereas with Windows it's far, far, far more accessible--I can play with ACLs, easliy manipulate services, and so on, with less than 10 clicks from a normal desktop. I just wish I could do more from the CLI more easily--and it's a shame that MSH won't be in Vista.

I'm not having that problem, at least not with Windows. :shrugs: Maybe it's because once you set security and permissions to an acceptable level with auto-updates, a lot of it is... fire-and-forget.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I only use Windows for games. I installed Ubuntu Linux (AMD64) and all my hardware got detected and configured properly, except the nvidia video driver which is disabled by default but trivial to enable (it's installed just not enabled), I was also impressed by how un-gimped it is (like Xandros linux is gimped Debian, Ubuntu is not-gimped Debian). Basically Ubuntu is really good, easy to install, easy to use, and good for power users too. I really should get around to trying out wineX, maybe I can stop using windows forever...

That's actually my problem now. While I understand Vista's got a lot of new stuff under the hood, playing with the beta 1 I have now, I'm failing to figure out a compelling reason to upgrade.

Depending on your game, Cedega (formerly WineX) might be worth the $15 / 3mos. deal. I personally didn't find it worth it, so I stopped.

If you had gentoo, there's a faq on how to use the free cvs version of Cedega, but... I haven't seen how adaptable it might be to other linux platforms, such as Ubuntu (which I don't use because its default is the abhorred Gnome.)

I know it is. But honestly, I think it'd be nice if it were added on by default, even if disabled--I feel the same way about a lot of the powertoys, such as TweakUI, PowerCalc, and CL Anywhere, for instance.
