I don't understand Florida building codes. There needs to be some serious building code upgrades to make buildings and houses wind resistant. We have earthquake codes here in Cali but in Florida it's like houses just keep getting blown over every single year.

My guess is that duct tape helps strengthen the window in the higher wind speeds. If flying debris hits it, it will probably keep the window pane from exploding into a million pieces.

The problem with plywood is twofold. One, I don't have a ladder to get to my back windows. Two, my building is made of cinderblock, so I'd have to buy a nailgun to secure the plywood.

Oh, there's a 3rd. I don't have a way to move the stuff from the hardware store back to my place.

But all of these problems can be overcome if necessary.

Most other storm-prone parts of the world have switched to concrete block for house construction... only the US continues to use wooden boxes on wheels.

Oh, crap - I do aviation weather for pilots, it's going to be a bunch of killer shifts as people fly down to Florida to pick up kids in the appropriate colleges, run down to board up summer - retirement - rental - parent's properties, and then they wait till the last second and want to know how to fly around a hurricane.
