Don't be an idiot. More water over 80F = more tropical cyclones trying to shed the extra warmth to higher latitudes. Hurricaines are the air conditioners of the tropical seas.

Anyway, this hurricane season has been rediculous, it is already at K for Christ's sake. Global warming is not the only reason, though. a very active year was already predicted, and we are supposed to be entering an active phase of a multi-decadal cycle. But add global warming to the mix and it doesn't look good.

Well, I don't consider myself an idiot - I tend to listen to those that know something about their works. In current case meterologists, and when they claim that their statistics says that there isn't more hurricanes than previously, well, I belive what they say. Of course they could be lying, but with both critical press and greenpeace hunting them, I seriously doubt that such lies will survive for long.

So global warming is an evil conspiracy by Eco-Luddites like Greanpeace now? Nearly all climatologists say the current bout of climate change is caused by humans. So you are calling all those 1500+ highly respected scientists on the Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fanatics? Tools of the eco-nut political agenda? Scientists have been concerned about global warming as far back as the late 50's, long before the eco-nuts jumped on it for thier own political agenda in the 80's.

I've heard some morons declaring that global warming must be being caused by the Sun getting brighter (the Sun has been getting brighter over geological time, but that is much too long scale to affect the current warming).

I think that most serious meterologists agrees with it, but of course there are others that think otherwise - actually, I'm glad that they do - I prefer that current knowledge is questioned.

Climate is changing as it has done several times in the existence of planet earth or for that matter in the last couple of houndres of years. Planet climate is pretty stable saying that it changes inside some limits. Once it was so hot that the vikings could establish settlements in greenland, wich died out when it got so cold that swedish troops safely could pass belts and wreak havoc in denmark that wouldn't be posible few years later.

The Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age mainly affected Europe, Eastern North America, and the north Atlantic. And the Greenlard argument is moot, it was BARELY habitable when they settled it, it didn't take much cooling to drive the settlement into oblivion. It is already warmer as a global average than the MWP, and it is getting pretty close to Altithermal (warmest part of the current interglacial 8000 years ago) levels.

As far as I know, it's highly discussed wether the climate that allowed settlements in greenland was local or not.

You say that it was a boarderline case if the greenland settlements could survive, and maybe it was, but you forget one thing. Current climate in that area demands a very serious change to allow a similiar settlement. Ciurrently it is impossible to do what those vikings did.

I don't doubt for a minute that climate are changing, I just doubt that feeble human activities can compete with nature - especially in those areas where we still haven't a clue about what is going on.

The warmth of the MWP and the cold of the little ice age was centered on the North Atlantic, the impact on the rest of the world was much less, indeed, many scientists don't think they were global at all.

The geological record shows that over millions of years climate goes in step with changes in CO2. at the end of the Eocene epoch there was a massive cooling of the climate that ussered in our modern Ice-House world. the change was concurrent with CO2 being absorbed by the weathering of the newly formed Himalayas. No intelligent person can deny that we are the cause of the rise of CO2 levels today, it started at the same time as the industrial revolution, and if CO2 level changes were the cause of climate shifts in the past, using the principle of Uniformitarianism, they will be the cause now.

Uhm, no, as far as I know, it was not a local "heatwave" that allowed settlements in greenland. I know that i'ts a loved claim of the hockey stick theory that it was local, but it isn't. The rest of the world had similiar rises in that period.

I don't deny that human activity is the cause of growth in CO2, I just question if that is the cause of climate variances. Latest theories even claim that it's the start of growing rice that has prevented northern europe from being covered in ice. I'm quite sceptic to this theory.

Sorry my Danish friend, but hard scientific data trumps sacred cows (like the supposed global nature of the Little Ice Age and MWP).

It does, but it plays a secondary role to CO2. The main risk from methane is if there is a large release of it from the melting permafrost.

I guess there's many ways of "handling any storm", like flooding parts of the city to save others, etc.

Put an end to popups!

100,000 people in New Orleans can't leave, they have no transportation and are going mainly to the Superdome to hide it out. This hurricane is going to take out a significant amount of the US oil supply, and is going to destroy outlying chemical plants and cemetaries will be wiped out causing lots of disease, this isn't going to be good at all. Not to mention that New Orleans is going to be under 30 feet of water which with the high winds can knock down skyscrapers.

How does it feel having your ass so comprehensively handed to you again...?

I was referring to the fact that your original reply to mine both contradicts itself and shows a complete ignorance to the mechanics and connection behind hurricanes and global warming...

This second reply of yours is pure idiocy and has quite rightly been ridiculed.

I suggest you now go away and read some elementary texts on the subject because we are to blame for the increased CO2 levels (and CH4 levels) and that is responsible for global warming - which just happens to elevate the likelihood of creating the conditions required for a hurricane...

Now go away and stop wasting our time...

70% of the city is below sea level. I fear that this Category 5 monster, along with the 30' storm surge, will knock down the dikes, flooding most of the city.

This could be the end of New Orleans as we know it.

Perhaps that would be the wake up call Americans need about the seriousness of Global Warming?

A sort of natural Hiroshima...

Hopefully New Orleans will not be seriously damaged as the hurricane might change its course. Of all the cities I've visited in the US, New Orleans was my favourite - it would be terrible if it were badly damaged...

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

How many causualties were there in the Galveston hurricane in the early 1900s?

Isn't that the record for hurricane deaths? With better construction, prediction, evacuation, etc, New Orleans will fare far better than that. But it's still not pretty to think about when it will make landfall...
