Nah - too dangerous!

Actually two return journeys - once coming and going and once going to see the cute lil' gators in the Bayou...

Still apart from the industrial canal to the east, none of these canals actually sector off the main part of the city as they only go part way into the city - so you're wrong despite having driven over several of them...

You didn't design the bulkheads for the Titanic did you?

*edited in* To keep it on topic, i read the Saints might play the whole year on the road or at an alternate location, perhaps leading to them moving to Los Angeles full time. What a sad twist that would be. I dont know the process behind a team moving in the NFL, but if I were another owner, and it were put to a vote, i'd vote the Saints stay in NO for sentimental reasons atleast.

Bush dropped the ball...

When invading Iraq has cost so much money that requests to improve levees last year were refused

When the 'peace' of Iraq has proved such a drain on manpower that the Louisiana National Guard is over there and not where they should be - guarding their patch of the nation.

Katrina and the Louisana National Guard

Bush is at least in some way accountable both for the destruction of New Orleans and hindering the recovery...

I'm not giving you any agruements on that. I'm just more concerned about what will actually happen than what he says. I find more inspiration from the folks down here in Arkansas(and many around the South) who are opening up their homes and wallets and sending truckloads of water down there everyday than in what someone regardless of party says in DC. The Feds are going to have to do something because ordinary people can only give so much.

Oh yeah, it was a children's hospital. They were trying to move neonatal care patients. Some guy on top of the building across the street starting taking shots at the NG vehicle as it was being loaded.

Some helicopter flights to bring more doctors into the city have been haulted due to security fears.

The National Guard should be authorised to return live fire against whoever is shooting. If people are dying and starving and someone is preventing the help efforts with guns, that makes him a very dangerous criminal.

As of this afternoon, the governor said that all NG troops and police (both local and the others coming in) have both arrest powers and the authorization to use 'whatever force necessary' to bring order to the city.

Under control of the governors. I'm not entirely sure where in the command structure they fit, but national guard units belong to the states.

Though apparently the US govt thinks they should be in Iraq instead shoring up the inadequacies of the US Army...

quote:
JACKSON BARRACKS -- When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.

"The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission," said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard.

And the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

In no state have those deaths registered more than in Louisiana. Louisiana, along with New York, has lost more guardsmen and reservists - 23 as of July 24 - than any state in the nation, and all but one of those deaths have come in the last eight months.

Before Bush took office, the NATIONAL guard was to help out with things like the hurricane that is slamming into LA as we speak. Well tough ****, they are in Iraq!

Got spare money?

Because clearly the purpose of national guard units is to sit in the state waiting for a natural disaster to happen, rather than support the US military.

national guard units are under control of the governors, but can be "nationalized" by order of the President. They are available for both local service, and national military service.

Mobius, I know you're a big expert on the USA, but several National Guardsmen have been as lacking as you in knowledge.
Their first priority is a kind of homeland security effort, to use today's nomenclature; but besides that, they AND the Coast Guard can be called into duty on foreign soil.
Coast Guard most definitely learned this in Vietnam, as the coasts included patrolling rivers.
Many national guard units were and are pressed into service to support the army, of which thay are a part.

Go gather your facts before attempting to be cute, because you fail miserably so far at being either cute or accurate.

Do you yourself write for the liberal-whiner blogs or just scour them for pathetic comments to use as your own?

No president has allocated the billions of dollars it would take to build a levee/pumping system that would have survived Katrina, nor could one ever do so. The small decrease in funding (while foolish in hindsight) would not have had an effect.

Your ignorance of the National Guard and its employment is simply pathetic and unworthy of further comment.

Facts gathered - as supplied by you!

If you're having to dip into your homeland security military reserve then your military is inadequately manned...

It is anarchy on the streets of New Orleans right now or hadn't you heard - the very people that should be dealing with this disaster are half a world away in Iraq!

They're talking about needing 40,000 troops just to deal with this - the reason why people are complaining it's taking so long for the military to instill order is because they're having to come in from outside!
