The Hurricane veered. It was the "better" side of Katrina that hit New Orleans.

If it had hit where it was predicted with the strength of a Category 5, things would be a lot different.

That happened last year as well you know. The problem with worst-case scenarios is that they're worst-case scenarios, and therefore rather unlikely.

That said, building a major city 2 meters beneath sea-level in an area prone to hurricanes is kind of asking for problems.

Bruce Willis is quite entertaining when you want to see a movie where you don't need to use your brain, though, I can't for the moment remember one where he tried to nuke a hurricane.

I guess that 200 times the current production capacity of electric energy is a little bit more than a nuke.

It's also on the delta of the major continental river in North America, and as such was a logical place to build a city for the colonists.

There's quite a few cities like that that are quite susceptible to even slight rises in water levels. Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Antwerp, Hamburg in Europe, New York, Philadelphia or San Fransisco in the US, Rio de Janeiro or Quayaquil in South America, Lagos or Cairo in Africa, Sidney in Australia, Dacca, Hong Kong or Karachi in Asia. All would suffer massively from a 20ft+ rise in water level. Admittedly not all are in the path of hurricanes, but it's an unfortunate circumstance that the the most fertile land (though not in the case of the bayous I guess), with best access to early trade routes are also thouse closest to sea level that are susceptible to these things.

Oceanfront property in Arkansas available for 350,000$ for two acres! Buy it while it's cheap!

If I could sell an acre for $175,000 I wouldn't ever have to lift a finger for the rest of my life.

I think some lakeside lots around Hot Springs are pretty high. $30K? Probably too high. I wouldn't be interested in buying them, so I don't remember.

---

New Orleans looks pretty rough, but there will be a massive recovery effort. Things will return to normal, sooner than we expect.

The weather here in Camden has been mostly cloudy with enjoyable temperatures and light wind in the past hour. I think we're right near the very edge of all the clouds that the hurricane encompasses, or something. No rain.

As Mississippi and Appalachia get rained on, all that rain will drain into the Mississippi (River) and go right back through New Orleans...will this be a major concern?

It's going to get a lot worse than that. The CNN reporter sounds like she's about to crack...she was out with the rescue boats, but they couldn't get to a lot of people and they weren't even able to get to the worst hit areas yet.

CNN's confirming it...

edit: Not just from one complex, though, that's just the inital report from the area.

reedit: Yes, it was from one building.

Also just said that about 20 sq mi of city and suburbs near New Orleans was underwater...

Tulane Univ. Hospital looks like it might be evacuated soon...water is currently rising at a an inch every 5 minutes, and once it hits the second floor they lose their generators...she just said there's over a thousand people there, and they'd all have to leave through the helipad.

There's a two-block long breach in the levy holding back Lake Pont...the lake is coming into the city. ****.

Got spare money?

Ok, it's not a place I've ever been, so I don't know...but, given that Lake Ponchartrain is above sea level, and most of the city is below, is there anything that stops the lake from submerging everything north of the river with the levee gone?

(A on this map is the hospital I mentioned...)

Full PM-box? Change here!

I'm having trouble getting Google Earth to tell me where the "17th Street Canal" is exactly. The two spots I got are both well-inside the urban developement between the lake and the river. Either way, water has the nasty habit of widening levee gaps...
