Driving in to work this morning the host of a local radio show gave the url of the red cross to make donations. First and only place where i've heard sollicitation. The major networks haven't posted links to relief organizations on their websites as they did with the Tsunami.

Not yet. There's been no call from the US to provide assistance. If your authorities can't provide information about your needs and whether your country will be able to meet them, you can't blame the others for not stepping in.

Cant blame people??? Dont people in other parts of world have a sense of generosity? If a major diaster like what happen with New Orleans I would want to give to the relief effort. I would not assume that other people whould pitch in or that nation could take care of their own people.

I'm not assuming that other people will pinch in.
I am assuming that your nation can take care of its own people: your nation is apparently assuming it can take care of Iraq's people on top of yours.

Just skimmed through the thread, but to the OP: I just read an interview with a guy from Germany's disaster aid/Red Cross, and he said they are prepaired to provide any aid they are able to give, but - as Richelieu mentioned - they are constantly in contact with US authorities, but nobody from the US side has requested anything so far. I guess that's the position in most countries.

If the US doesn't ask for help, what good will sending any do? Have French and Dutch technical experts drinking bad coffee in airport lobbies because they just got sent over without the USA asking for them or deciding where they should be put to use?

I mean, we can't even send money unless we're told where to send it to. The moment help is asked for, we can provide it but until then, we're in the no-man's land of only being able to express sympathy.

That, and Portugal's on fire while Austria's underwater. We've got some stuff in our own backyard that's tying up some resources.

well forgive Sloww...
that's the standard troll you'll hear from conservatives...

and I'll paraphrase:

"the US gives aid to other countries but when stuff happens to us nobody gives us anything..."

that is, completely ignoring the fact that the US gives aid to POOR countries that NEED it and the US is a RICH country that usually DOESN'T!!

I was thinking to myself, would most Americans want foreign governments to give their government money?

And then I heard a local radio blatherer SCREAMING that the Govt of Alberta should give $1 billion dollars... to whom she did not say.

I thought about it for a little while. For every dollar rise in oil prices, Alberta rakes in $100 million (annually).

It occured to me that we could well afford to split off a portion of the windfall that is surely to follow the Gulf Coast getting hammered to helping people who might not have insurance. Some sort of referral service where social workers and clergy could refer people who really needed help. Just as long as it's done quietly.

Other than that, I'd bet a two-four that the Gulf Coast is gonna be crawling with Northern Cajuns taking holiday time, and in some cases paid time, to help out with hands on assistance in clean up and rebuilding. It's what we do. We usually go there and help out if it's a neighbour in real trouble.

I'm going to issue the same challenge to my fellow Polytubbies that I issued when the tsunami hit.

No industrialized nation spends as much as 1% of its GDP on humanitarian aid.

We can do better. Donate 1% of your yearly salary to the relief organization of your choice.

This devastated area is much larger than Texas.

And Sava, our government has in the past, and will continue to make supplies, and rebuilding loans available.
So don't even.
Again, lets be clear on this question.

WHAT are OTHER nations going to do?

Israel,Russia,Canada,Japan,France,Saudi Arabia,Venezuela are so far offering what help that they can. But by and large it will be our military that responds to this.

Sure, though none of the local relief organisations has said anything about this specific disaster.

Sure you have more properties damaged, but more people got stomped to death in Iraq just yesterday. Don't forget that the US is the richest country. People will think, "The US... don't they have loads of $?"

Chavez is quick to use this event for himself though:

http://asia.reuters.com/news/newsAr...A-CHAVEZ-DC.XML

"CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a vocal critic of the U.S. government, on Wednesday called President Bush a "cowboy" who had failed to manage the Hurricane Katrina disaster and evacuate victims.

"That government had no evacuation plan, it is incredible, the first power in the world that is so involved in Iraq ... and left its own population adrift," Chavez said in a cabinet meeting broadcast live on television."

What I don't get, is why the mayor of NO or the govenor of LA doesn't simply accept the help instead of waiting for Shrub to have someone tell him to accept it. Embarress the ****ing Fed's into doing the right thing.

Right???? In the short time they had they were able to evacuate 80% of the people in New Orleans. The ones that could not or would not leave because they thought they could ride out the strom are going to be evacuated. What else could have been done? Chavez is an idiot and I think many will see through this. The only people who will take any stock in it is people who already hate the US or hate Bush. I think it is disgusting that any world leaders are using the death of thousands and the destruction of millions of people's home to get good public relations.

This makes no sense to me. I think it is great that other countries want to help, but the Federal government has billions of dollars that it can spend to help the victims right now. The whole country is coming togather to help the victoms of this diaster. It is not like anyone is going to die because Bush refused help from other countries. If I where president I would accept it, but I dont think it is that big of a deal. Besides the aid is a drop in the ocean compared to what the government and charity is bring to the area.
