the begian governement is preparing to send medical and logistical aid to the states that got hit by katrina. right now they are gathering military personnel to perform the operation.

so yes, help is comming

and on a side note: i heard a small part of your president's speech. who the **** does that guy think he is ? he says that the donations of private americans are not enough. that he is not happy with them (don't recall his exact words but i was shouting at my radio) i mean come on, he can spend gazillions of dollars in iraq, but he is unwilling to unconditionally help his own people, no matter what the cost ????

Spiffor, Please check out the Core of Engineers own website about this. It is true that the funding was reduced, but if the entire requested amount had been approved it would have made no difference. A lot of the money was for new bridges and rainfall control. There was very little for levee improvement. In addition, the current levees were only constructed to defend against a Category 3 hurricane, not a 4 or 5. To increase the levees to withstand Category 5 damage would and will take billions. This amount, although desired by scientist, was just a dream until now. No one had proposed this in any budget request.

So, although I agree Bush's actions were in the wrong direction, the truth is they were inconsequential to this disaster. There are better trolls for you to use against Bush.

World leaders offer sympathy, aid

Friday, September 2, 2005; Posted: 10:38 a.m. EDT (14:38 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair led world leaders' pledges of aid to hurricane-stricken areas of the U.S. Friday with an offer to help "in any way we can."

"The whole of this country feels for the people of the Gulf Coast of America" who have been hit "by what is a terrible, terrible natural tragedy," he said.

Blair's comments added to a growing catalog of prayers, messages of condolence and pledges of money and aid that have been offered from countries across the globe in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II sent a message to the White House offering her sympathy and the Vatican sent a telegram to say that Pope Benedict XVI was "deeply saddened" by the disaster and that he was praying for the victims and rescuers.

Australia on Friday said it would donate A$10 million (US$7.7 million) immediately to the American Red Cross as well as sending a team of emergency management specialists to identify what other help could be offered and providing services where most needed.

Japan donated $200,000 to the Red Cross and would also provide up to $300,000 in aid supplies such as tents and power generators, The Associated Press quoted officials as saying.

The European Union said it was ready to offer any assistance in the wake of "what is perhaps the greatest civil emergency in U.S. history."

Several countries had already been approached by the U.S. to release oil reserves and would do what they could, EU security affairs chief Javier Solana said on Britain's Sky News network, AP reported. (Schroeder backs reserve release)

NATO said help was available but it would need to know more about what could be needed.

Germany also said it would offer aid or money if requested by Washington, though officials said the U.S. was well equipped to deal with natural disasters.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sent a telegram to President George W. Bush saying he was "deeply shocked" by the news.

"Many Germans know and love the City of New Orleans and feel deeply the great worries the people there and in the region have regarding their safety and future," he wrote.

French President Jacques Chirac -- an opponent of Bush over the issue of the Iraq war -- added a handwritten "Dear George" to his letter of condolence to the U.S. in which he expressed France's "deepest condolences" and solidarity with those affected.

At the United Nations, the official spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the U.S. was the country best prepared in the world to deal with such a natural disaster.

But he added that the sheer size of the catastrophe meant outside help might be useful.

"The American people, who have always been the most generous in responding to disasters in other parts of the world, have now themselves suffered a grievous blow," he said.

The U.N.'s humanitarian chief, Jan Egeland, said Katrina was one of history's most damaging natural disasters. He said it had caused more destruction than last year's December 26 tsunami that killed an estimated 180,000 across southern Asia, AP reported.

In the Netherlands, much of which lies below sea level as in New Orleans, there was some consternation that the Louisiana city was so poorly prepared, AP reported.

The nation installed massive hydraulic sea walls known as the Delta Works after devastating floods in 1953.

"I don't want to sound overly critical, but it's hard to imagine that [the damage caused by Katrina] could happen in a Western country," Ted Sluijter, press spokesman for Neeltje Jans, the public park where the Delta Works are exhibited, was reported as saying by AP.

"It seemed like plans for protection and evacuation weren't really in place, and once it happened, the coordination" was poor.

'Solidarity' among nature's victims

But from others hit by national disasters, there was more sympathy.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga said she and her fellow citizens felt solidarity with those affected.

"Having experienced the fury of nature ourselves during the December 26 tsunami, the people of Sri Lanka and I fully empathize with you at this hour of national grief," she said in a message to the U.S.

And while the small island nation is still recovering from the tsunami disaster, it also pledged $25,000 to the American Red Cross, the AP reported.

We've offered help before but if you dont tell us what you need we cant send anything.

A Dutch naval ship is now underway from the Antilles with suplies and medial/resque teams with 2 helicopters and a load of dinghis and crew.
Not that the US asked for it but we sent it anyway.

I hoped the US would be better prepared for any catastrophy after previous hurricanes and 9/11

Canada sending four ships to Louisiana: Graham
CTV.ca News Staff

Defence Minister Bill Graham has announced that Ottawa is sending three Canadian warships and a coast guard vessel packed with relief supplies to the hurricane-ravaged U.S. Gulf Coast.

Graham said the destroyer, HMCS Athabaskan, and two frigates, HMCS Ville de Quebec and HMCS Toronto, are being readied for deployment and should leave Halifax in three or four days. They will be accompanied by the CCGS Sir William Alexander.

It will take another three to four days before the ships arrive in the Gulf of Mexico.

Organizers of the mission, dubbed Operation Union, said the ships are expected to provide humanitarian aid, along with divers, and engineering expertise for reconstruction.

As well, three Sea King helicopters will be sent to ferry personnel into the devastated areas.

Commodore Dean McFadden, who will command the deployment, said they were discussing with their American counterparts what their role will be during the expected month-long mission.

He thought their duties will involve reconstruction, health care and humanitarian aid.

"We will have the capacity to move people. We'll have the capacity to bring medical supplies and fuel capabilities,'' McFadden said as he stood on the dock next to destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, the command and control ship for the mission.

"The specific jobs we're going to do, I'll wait until the Americans tell us what help they need.''

Earlier, Prime Minister Paul Martin told reporters in Saskatoon that "whatever aid is required [Canada] will provide it."

The prime minister rejected the suggestion that Canada has been slow to react to the growing crisis.

"We're not waiting to be asked for help," Martin told reporters at a pancake breakfast commemorating Saskatchewan's centennial celebration.

"We're waiting to be told how our aid can best be directed.

"The Americans have said to us, 'Listen we're not in a position to take this. We have to set up coordinating bodies.' Once they are set up, we will be able to do it. But for us just to land there in the midst of a lot of chaos really wouldn't do anybody any good."

Ottawa is also responding on another front.

Martin announced Friday that Canada will increase oil exports as requested by the International Energy Agency.

"Our goal will be to help stabilize the existing situation but not in any way that will impose any diminishing supply for Canadians," Martin said.

If the other 26 member countries do the same they will help stabilize the world market in the wake of the storm, which badly damaged the U.S. Gulf Coast oil supply.

Martin said he had consulted with the province and oil companies before making his decision.

He said the aid effort won't result in a shortage in Canada.

Canadian drivers have been hammered at the gas pumps in recent days due to energy price spikes cause by the hurricane.

The biggest aid that everybody gave was the release of the refined products from their national reserves. Thanks all.

For some reason, we didn't have a reserve of refined products ourselves. Through foresight from other countries, there won't be a disruption in fuel supply.
