Got spare money?

The spanish and the austrians should kick the turks out of europe, and also remove the orthodox ecumenical patriarch and replace him with a catholic bishop.

Don't mind him, it's just the greeks inferiority complex before the true ancient cultures - like how the stole the canaanite/phoenician/Israel alphabet, for example.

Sandman and you are both right. Recognizing Cyprus is a low key requirement. However, it's not the only one, and Turkey faces more stringent requirements than the 10 new members and the 2 future members (Romania and Bulgaria).

That's mostly because the EU-leaders weren't really satisfied with the joining process of the 10+2, and changed the rules. Similar stringent rules can be found about white+catholic Croatia.

Really though if you think about it. the skopjians are people suffering from identity crisis. even though they are bulgars they dont want to join bulgaria. when they got their independence the 1st thing they did was to write a constitution calling for attack against greece. they got the wood in the ass with the embargo and revoked those clauses. and revoked the sun of vergina.
now 50% plus of skpjia is albanians.

amazing balkans what a situation i still believe rigas feraios plan to unify all balkans under one single state would have been something worth trying.

BTW Sir Og, Vetty and Ancyrean, I have a book that details how history is teached in schools in all balkan countries (including Turkey). It is very interesting and funny. If Markos or Axi want to read it it's the: "Provlimata istoriographias sta sxolika egxeiridia ton balkanikon xoron ".

oh and because che is as always confused,
when i talk about macedonia i talk about the geographic region (most of it in greece today, the rest in skopjie/fyrom and a little bit in bulgaria) as it was before the balkan wars (so before it was divided between serbia and greece) and before the (total) collapse of the ottoman empire. that's when the komitazides (from bulgaria) were operating.
the populations were very mixed. greek villages next to bulgarian villages etc inside macedonia.

greece and serbia fought bulgaria for it. bulgaria attacked first but it was no secret that serbia and greece were planning to divide the territory after italy screwed up the plan to divide the territories for serbia.
before that the komitazides had bulgarians fighting against bulgarians and greeks fighting alongside bulgarians against bulgarians and turkey recognizing the autonomy of bulgarian church to dellite the autonomy movements. it was a big chaos

there's also an interesting race of two armies, the bulgarian and the greek to take over thessalonike with the latter getting there earlier. ww2 pales compared to the huge intrigues, complications plans, interferences etc in the balkans after ottomans were brought down.
only balkans now about that, others like che or molly just pop up to say whatever bull is on their mind

I have been wondering about that too. It is extremely interesting to know what is taught to students in the different countries.
Do you know if it is available in other languages (Bulgarian, Russian and English work for me)

BTW today Bulgaria celebrates 120 years since the Unification of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in 1885.
After the Unification was proclaimed the Bulgarian army was waiting on the southern border anticipating a responce from Turkey but instead the Serbs decided that they can make an easy landgrab and attacked.
It would be very interesting to know what is being taught regarding this event in Serbia.

I wonder if this anti-Macedonian feeling among greeks is or was mutual. Our family had a Macedonian exchange student for a year about 10 years ago, and he hated Albanians, not Greeks.

BTW, he gave us a whole bunch of Macedonian stuff from before they dropped the star of Vergina from the flag or whatever, so I have all these old banners with the old flag lying around - I think it looks much better. The new one is too much like the Japanese naval ensign.

Better yet, whoever can figure out who is actually buried in Vergina wins the argument and gets the symbol.

Might an EU snub of Turkey cause a wave of Islamic nationalism in the country leading to collapse of democracy?
