One thing i was wondering about regarding techs. It was said that you can research anything as long as it has a connection to a previous tech. Also, if one tech has 2 connections, you only need one of the previous ones, right?

It has also been said that there are no 'ages' per say - its one long tech tree.

So my question then is, how does that work with techs that have no preceding techs - like FLIGHT?

I'm sure there is something that prevents me from researching flight in the stoneage, but how does it work?

The idea is that you can go right to flight in maybe 10 techs, but the problem is how costly it would be to research those techs without the income of a modern economy, then researching then building a bomber would take like 900 turns (ok so that's a bit much).

I read the article and it seems that the writer is a tad bit too excited about automation of workers. Of all the Civ titles, I never automated my workers; one of the reasons, is because I don't want the workers to build roads and railroads in ridiculous routes that make no practical sense.

And what if I prefer a specific type of improvement on a certain tile, even if an automated worker wants to replace it with what is suppose to be the best improvement for that tile?

I have always micromanaged workers, and by the late game, I do get the feeling of tediousness and weariness but I have taken it as a necessary inconvenience, given the flaws of automated workers.

Maybe with Civ IV I will try automating my workers for the first time, to see how it works. They may be more "intelligently" automated than in previous Civ titles.

But you do know that you could automate them in the past civ games, right? The reviewer, however, sounds like "Oh! behold! Worker automation! first time I see it! and WAW!!! autoexplore! That is hugely new!!!"

There may be no ages per say, but if they were ages, then there will be 5 ages. Age 1 has 20 dis. Age 2 has 19, Age 3 has 17, Age 4 has 19, and Age 5 has 16 if you count furture dis.

Yes, I will probably give automation a try the first few games. Then, when I know what's going on I'll probably turn their automation OFF totally and micromanage them as I do with civ3. Then again, I am not "most" people.

civ3 automated workers do a very good job.
I always give my workers orders for the first 100 something turns, then I turn them on automate. It comes with an option to not alter current improvements.

You can also say "build road to" or "irrigate towards" commands. There's really no reason to manually keep moving your workers in civ3 unless you want them to improve the land in an ineffective way.

Apparantly the game is coming out earlier since they don't release everything at once.
Some parts of the multiplayer engine will be released later, and the development kit will be released later.

Well, I need some practice anyway before I start multiplayer games and I do'nt care if the develoment kit comes in later. If this means that the single player game is finished while being released, I think this is not bad news.

Uhm, has there been anything to confirm this? All official messages from Firaxis I've read confirmed that CivIV will have multiplayer out of the box.

The SDK was always gonna be released later, nothing new there. The Pitboss thingie is new, but as long as they're not charging extra for it, it's not that big a deal. The problem with releasing extra stuff later is that not everyone has internet access so not everyone can take advantage of it. But thing about MP is, you *have* to have internet access if you want to use it at all.

In this case it could even be seen as an advantage: we get (hopefully) a good, functional game sooner, with a few nice extra features coming later. Stretches the fun out over a longer period of time. It's not like you can play every variation of the game the day you buy it anyway. It also helps to fight piracy: the more stuff you release later, the harder it'll be for pirates to keep up (assuming there's a CD-check on it or whatever). Of course, this argument only goes as long as the out-of-the-box game is good, complete and stable, otherwise it's just rubbing it in that you paid to be a beta-tester. Only time will tell...

I read this:

But also, the Americans get a cool unique unit late in the game: the Navy SEAL, which replaces the Marine unit, as well as the top-level F-15 fighter jet from Civilization III.

to mean that Navy Seal replaces the UU F-15 fighter from CivIII, not that Americans get a Navy Seal AND F-15 fighter in CivIV.

Wonderful! The game improvement I agitated (and hoped) for is delayed.

Does anyone else think the railroads are annoying looking?

I dont see much difference between civics and government type but that may be poor writing/comprehension on the part of the author.
