Tales from the New Millennium European Diplomatic Front Inflate your Upload Space

This thread will be the locus for the stories.

About 10,000 years ago, the Alpine glaciers advanced northward over the Bavarian plateau toward the site of present-day Munich. These solid rivers of ice - some as thick as 6,000 feet in depth - carved out the relief of the Alpine valleys as we know them today. The lakes of the Bavarian plateau, including those of the Salzkammergut region, were also created by the receding glaciers during this time.

During the New Stone Age, the indigenous hunters encountered farming peoples from the more advanced southwest Asia, who were migrating up the Danube Valley into central Germany about 4,500 BC. These populations mixed and settled in villages to raise crops and breed livestock. The people of this Danubian culture lived with their animals in large, gabled wooden houses, made pottery, and traded with Mediterranean peoples for fine stone and flint axes and shells. As their hand-hoed fields wore out, they moved on, often returning years later. The Late Stone Age also saw the beginning of pile-dwellings on several lakes. These waterfront structures are believed to be early trading-posts.

The first two villages of the farmers of the Danube valley were VINDOBON (later Vienna) and AK INK (later Budapest). The residents of these villages were Asiatic: the ancestors of the modern-day Austrians as yet lived in the Caucasus region with all the ancestors of the Indo-Europeans, while the ancestors of the modern-day Hungarians (Magyars) had already taken up residence in central Asia, whence they would sweep as the Hun invasion. Nevertheless, these two small villages would form the foundation of the magnificent AUSTRIAN civilization to come.

Tired of ads?

Londinium was conquerd by Queen Boudicca.

She waives the rules

There is a great future behind us...
she looks skyward in the vicinity of AC and wonders if there is something there....
The stench of her soldiers nearby distracts her from this vision. Much work to be done here, towns to build and land to cultivate. Maybe even other people to befriend.....

The Russ have found friendly inhabitants eager to work, and trade in the vast lands of the North.

I Crusty the Rusky otherwise known as NickolausII, have long been entrusted with the leadership of these humble seafaring folk and now also these industrious farmers and herders who originally settled here and welcomed us.

Queen Boudicca reigns supreme after the establishment of 6 fine cities and a strong army of horsemen (along with the odd howie)
The Year 2100BC sees the citizens in an uprising to finally crown her as Queen Eternal. Brittania, with tri-remes, will soon explore the far reaches of this continent in search of.... Vadka, she believes it's called...
It is believed that something to do with alcohol and stale bread is far to the East;
whilst a handsome Prince is believed to be nearby.
There are other nations too, it is believed....

Approximately 2500 BC, Indo-European migrants began to filter into the fertile Danubian plain, intermixing with the native farmers. They brought with them new forms of living and governance, including the science of Absolute Monarchy. The First Eastern Reich (Oesterreich) was established around 2150 BC, centering around Vindobon, although proto-Teutonic tribes as far south as modern-day Vojvodina reportedly pay homage to the king who sits there. The Danubians have established friendly relations with their close cousins to the North, the tribes of Germania, and with the Etruscan hill-dwellers to the West.

The Etruscans, for the benefit of historians in future eons, look forward, first, to discovering where they came from, and second, to finding out where they go when they finally go. Gee, will it settle some arguments in eons to come.

Yes, indeed Germans! *Grunt* = ICS LOL

Queen Boudicca continues to reign supreme and is sole ruler of the waves. With the Lighthouse wonder we shall defend our island for eons.

However, with only 12 cities and other nations with many more cities along with powerful wonders that please their citizens, we desperately seek out new lands to establish an empire upon which the sun will never set.

A strong alliance has been forged with the French. Queen Boudicca rather fancies young Charlie, or Louis as he was called in the current period.

The Britons also seek out skilled army captains and believe that masterful leaders are to be found near the southern oceans.... something about Roman?

Queen Boudicca has MUCH to offer and will use all her feminine wiles for Britain

She believes that some far off nations actually leave their cities totally undefended. If such cities do indeed exist they will fall victim to the foul odours of the celtic garrisons...

During the period 2100 to 400 BC the Danube basin saw the coming of the Celtic La Tene culture. Unfortunately, the thriving civilization saw itself pressed on two sides by Arabs and Romans. The Arabs, coming from Asia Minor, made a treaty with the tribes of Serbia to the effect that the Danubian tribes would allow the Arabs to settle one region of the Danube (the region known to the Danubians as "Drobeta" and as "Izmir" to the Arabs) and a corridor extending directly from that region to Anatolia (see map below). However, the unruly Arabs attempted to settle areas outside that corridor and to intimidate the Danubians from settling the rest of that great river. So far the Danubians have not been intimidated - especially as their army is much larger than that of the interfering Arabs.

The red area is that reserved for the Turks.

The other brief controversy was between the Celtic tribe of the Norici, which had settled across the Alps in the area of modern-day Trieste. The upstart Roman civilization reminded the Norici of a treaty they'd signed promising not to cross the Alps. A translation barrier had prevented the Norici from understanding this treaty. Nevertheless, to foster future amicable relations, the Norici picked up and moved to nearby Slovenia.

The Austro-Hungarian kingdoms are pleased with the progress they have made and look forward to forging strategic relations with other civilizations.

The Etruscans continue to wonder where they come from and, in addition, where they're going to disappear to in about 800 years.

That aside, they've developed a rather tasty dish of veal, sage, prosciutto, white wine and butter, which might, one day, be called Saltimbocca. They're also looking forward muchly to the development, in about 1000 years, in the central region of the land, of a crisp white wine called Vernaccia. Get your fingers out, lads, we're thirsty!

As Mazarin had layed the reinforcement necessary to secure the foundation of the divine right of kings, Louis XIV came to the throne weilding (arguably) absolute power over the state.

From his central government in Versailles, Louis has made great efforts to extend his domain south and east. The great Sun King of Glorious France looks greedily to the Iberian peninsular and its potential wealth. His northern neighbours, the British, have been very cooperative and the Sun King hopes to nurture relations with Queen Boudicia with the proposal of a free trade agreement.

The Sun King scorns the thought of trade with those who practice the misled economic theory of Mercantilism, but decides he will match the incoming tariffs of any civilization with which we trade.

King Louis XIV has extended his freindship
to every civilization he has encountered and seems to have charmed the Queen of the British of whom he ponders whether is worth giving up his mistresses.

Hmmmm.....nah it's too good to be the King!

Prospects are good.....much to be done.

We arranged no such thing; besides, "Wallachia" is not even in Russia (the south-central region of Romania is called Wallachia). (The part of my chatlog where we made our deal is unfortunately overwritten now - otherwise I'd post it.) In fact, I told you when we made the deal I would build on the rest of that river (the Danube). Now, if you want southern Russia, take it. I just want the Balkans. If you want to move settlers north of Wallachia to build, go ahead. To expand faster, you might want to use triremes to move up to the north coast of the Black Sea instead. Whatever. I just want the Balkans, as I thought we'd agreed!

Here we go...bits and pieces of our conversation were carried on in ICQ. Right before we made the deal I asked:

<center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:

im confused as to why you want that part of the river in particular, as i will be building east of it. why dont you take the easternmost part of that river? (that rivers the danube, btw)
And the user was away
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

And then apparently you said something via chat, and then I wrote:

<center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1>

You have sent a message!
i see - you want one city out of reach of ships. very well - but i get the rest of that river then. ill guarantee you a corridor from your mainland to that spot
And the user was away
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

See? I said I would get the rest of the river that Izmir was sitting on, and you didn't object. And I said you would get a corridor from your mainland to Izmir, which I have outlined above in red. What does the term "corridor" mean to you? To me it means a straight, narrow passage, not a huge amorphous chunk (as in your map).

quote from Markus:
"Then i will pester you so you fall far behind in tech."

Queen Boudicca thinks it highly unlikely that any nation will fall too far behind in techs... there are many equilibrating forces at work

A nation that gets free techs without any science investment, whilst putting all it resources into city building, yet builds no armies is really asking for trouble

It is *understandable* that other nations will be bemused by the bold and aggressive assertions of a military cripple.

Queen Boudicca plans to hold a secret rendezvous with all the (male!) leaders she has made contact with - one way or another...
Suffice to say that the key agenda item for discussion is the parallel planning of all nations science discoveries

Pardon?

That aside, someone's buggered up the thread with one of their posts. Could you fix it? Please?

I think the machinations behind the scenes is what really enriches the game and produces unpredictable outcomes. Elendil spent a lot of time setting this modpak up so it's great to see everyone getting into the swing of it
I think we should all use the same map and graphics too - it effects the spirit and identity of the game.
