Actually this is NOT the Balkan Confederation I was alluring to

But I'd have no problem living in the same place as serbs (or croats ). My expression was not because I found the idea bad, but because it never had crossed my mind.

Hey Saras,
what is Lithuania? Is it eatable?

Split '85 was the BEST basketball team of the world. The only european team who could beat the Dream Team.

I tell you the truth, Americans live in fear for their hoops dominance because of the young studs in Lithuania.

Sten, you da MAN!

You should see Kaukenas play for Vilnius - Seton Hall should have kept him at ANY cost. Good that they didn't.

When I was 6, socialism in my country ended and we were sucked up by the federal republic, which we are a part of nowadays... that happened democratically, BTW. Everyone in the East knew the Christian Democrats (conservatives) were for the reunification and the Social Democrats were against it, so anyone who voted for the conservative sister party in the East voted for reunification.. after the elections, the conservatives had won the most seats in the people's chamber (first and only democratic election for the "socialist parliament"), and then the 2 countries became one, namely one sucked up the other... and the constitutional law about every territory that wishes to be part of Germany just has to speak it out and will become so is still exisitng, since the reunification is not yet complete

Anyway, back then I liekd the idea of becoming a part of "The West", which always appeared as heacen for us. Nowadays I don't remember any bad about the democratic republic, so anti-communists really can't convince me of any of their points by telling me about suffer in the Soviet-ruled areas... there just was no suffering, just a bit lack of freedom now and again, which I never felt. My parents know to tell books aboutit though, but it all sounds like hypocrisy, since most adults in the East vote either conservative or they vote for the successor of the eastern, socialist unity party, so they vote for the blokes which they kicked back then. And the lack of freedom they complain about the most is lack of freedom to travel...

Falls under lack of freedom I suppose. But then, it's notlike they terrorized a whole population. There were laws about escape from republic, it was forbidden, and they knew it. They couldn't stand the system and knew the official way of moving to the west would take years? Well, that is a tough fate, but as I said, I was 6 when idt all ended, so I don't know what it felt like to live in that system. They tried to leave the risky way and they knew it. I wouldn't be too surprised if some of them were just adventurous people who likes the risk, but the majority was probably just desperate people, there are many famous examples, so don't think I'm ignorant of the situation.

BTW, one statute was that peace was more important than freedom. And it was kind of successful. Silly enough, the SU had to invade Afghanistan and destroyed the whole picture, but apart from that, you can hardly say tey were acting in imperialist ways. Even the actions taken in Prague, Budapest and East Berlin could be interpreted in the peace-keeping kind of way. And truly, those interventions are harmless compared to the US aggressions in South American countries were pro-marxist governments had just been elected freely

I'm not trying to defend the system, but it had its advantages over the western ones. I can't remember any mad guy ever flew a plane into a skyscraper in Moscow or Leningrad or any other major town in Russia or its satellite SSRs.

Because the lack of freedom and controls were so great that the state would have likely caught the attackers. Anyway, his ethnic group would probably be deported to Siberia after such an event. Moreover, with such strict border controls these fanatics woul have had difficulty getting into the USSR in the first place.

I thought a lot about the victims and hence have difficulty comprehending how you can describe the Soviet/Warsaw Pact invasions into Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland as peacekeeping operations.
