Very cunning this thread. Take the traditional British stance of low self-worth, in marked contrast to American blow-your-own-trumpetism, then wait for the whole rest of the world to praise our great acheivements, on which the whole of western culture is built

I don't know if I'd go that far. Continental Europe has provided much. Besides, England owes much of her culture to her former close ties with "Germany".

Don't be so afraid of America. Remember, we're a BIG country now, with an awful lot of differences between our states. Some states are socially and culturally very close to England, while others are far out in right field. This lets us do a pretty good job of experimenting with vastly different systems and seeing which work best for the moment. Don't worry too much about the 'loud-mouths'.

Personally, I think it would be great for all the Anglo countries to enjoy joint citizenship. It pisses me off royally, that Britian is a far better friend to America than we are to her. Joint citizenship would do much to fix that. Let's re-build the British empire!

The BBC? Yeah right. EastEnders five nights a week, infinately overextended show ideas, bad scheduling, horrid news. Channel 4 is good, but generally british TV is awful.

Just look at what's on on a saturday night at eight, a spot that should carry the top family programme of the week. Casualty? The Lesley Garrett Show? And at nine on a saturday, reruns on both BBC channels? Gimme a break!

Forgive me for trying to answer the question.. Suffering from ads?

1. Our Education system is terrible, and parents in general do not pass on a culture of getting education to their kids as a route to success. As a result, (at least) two things have happened:

- there is a vast difference in the education level of managers in Uk companies vis a vis the US, Germany, France, Italy and Japan, from my personal experience, and so most of Britain's companies have been badly managed for a long time, and many still are

- the Oxbridge elite keep themselves and their values in power, which results in..

2. Some truly terrible decision making and resource/opportunity wastage: nationalisation, COncorde, Suez, EU membership delays, over reliance on government in the 60s and 70s

I am sure there are many others.

Eastenders is pretty damn good, as soaps go. And you''re moaning about classical music being shown at prime time? How many countries do that?
And I'll just have to take your word for it that Swedish news is the most balanced, informative and extensive in the world...
And don't get me started on tbe wonders of BBC Radio...

Yes, we have oil. We have good quality oil.

It's so good we export it all and buy in the cheap stuff.

North Sea Oil is the oil benchmark.

Prices are even displayed as "Brent crude per barrel".

We're considerably richer than Saudi. Check the GDP figures Seneca.

But in terms of oil revenue...

Brent Oil might be better but there isn't as much of it.

Its not a patch on Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska!

The drive through Nebraska was so damned boring that to see a couple of old cars piled into a Stonehenge replica was actually the higlight of the day.
