KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Cinema goers should not expect a history lesson from the military thriller "Black Hawk Down," which sidelines the role Malaysia played in rescuing U.S. troops in Somalia, Defence Minister Najib Tun Razak said.
"We are disappointed that the film 'Black Hawk Down' had denied the sacrifices of our Malaysian Battalion team during the rescue operations when two U.S. helicopters went down in Somalia," Najib was quoted as saying by Wednesday's New Straits Times newspaper.
"We cannot stop anyone from making their movies for commercial value... however, we have to take it with a pinch of salt," the minister added.
However, Najib's spokesman told Reuters he had not yet seen the movie, although he had read the book.
Eighteen U.S. Army Rangers and one Malaysian died on October 3, 1993 when Somali militias shot down two U.S. helicopters in the capital Mogadishu.
The Red Cross reported 500 Somalis wounded and reporters saw truckloads of dead after what was one of the deadlier firefights in a botched U.S. and United Nations military intervention in Somalia between December 1992 and March 1995.
The Ridley Scott-directed film, produced for the Sony Corp. (6758.T) by Revolution Studios, depicts an abortive U.S. effort to oust Somali warlord General Mohamed Farah Aideed.
The production led the North American box office last weekend and also opened at number two in Britain and number one in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
The New Straits Times also quoted Colonel Mohd Rozi Baharom, the then deputy commander of Malaysia's contingent in Somalia, as voicing disappointment at the film's version of events.
"Our soldiers were shot at from every angle and it was very intense for everyone.
"I would rather that the writer did not even mention the role of the Malaysian troops during the rescue than change the whole history," he was quoted as saying. |
I heard the somali's cheared each time a soldier went down

The UN went there, in suport of humanitarian relief efforts. As the UN had it's ass handed to it, it asked the US to take a larger security role in the humanitarian mission. We were the enemies of Mohammad Farah Aidid, who's followers found the Somali famine and drought to be a convenient weapon of extermination against the traditional enemies / victims (farmer tribes as opposed to warrior tribes) of his clan.
The famine threatened 4.5 million Somalis. Aidid was quite happy with that, because they weren't his people, they were enemies of his people, so he was happy to attack UN forces (initially mostly non-Americans), and hijack relief supplies from humanitarian groups. |
I see. So you were caught up between fighting fractions.
So logically those whom you tried to help would be on your side.
What is the percentage of those with Aidid and those against him in Somalia, anyone knows?

BTW I know this would sound harsh but it sounded like a badly planed operation.
But in this instance and from the few things I have heard about it, it seems to me that this was an instance where the US really did try to help without having an agenda of its own... So I guess I'm sorry that these things happened.
Maybe when the euro-army will be cemented you can just say "do it yourselves and see how it goes".
I think that a very large part of the US military officials had very strong reservations about doing it. And that it was the Clinton administration (good intentions - wrong choices in that matter) who forced the military to go there no matter what.
Isn't it also true that in Somalia the Al Qaeda has a large following?
This whole region seems like a volcano that explodes from time to time and whoever happens to be there gets fried.
