Being only two years removed from High School...
There is a problem, but it is no less a or great a problem than it ever was. Anybody else watched any movies from/about the late 60's or 70's, remember how they portrayed pot-smoking and alcohol as no big deal. Wow, seem a little similar to now? OK, same with sex, except now, we know about all of those STDs that they didn't, we know about all of the consequences of these drugs. The only problem, is that some parents have no clue how to deal with responsibility, and most teachers aren't paid enough for them to care. More and more, the teacher is turning into a someone who just prepares kids for standardized (i.e. good scores = money) tests and parents are busy working or getting divorced or finding a new mate or their sexuality. Our society is much more open about the problems of parents and willing to let them live lives. Unfortunately, kids are being sacrificed for the parents' lives. Be that good or bad, it is happening in some cases. Plus, we don't have idols that are clean cut, most "idols" don't want to be idols, unfortunately they are and should deal with that responsibilty, not brag about having relations with 20,000 women (Wilt the Stilt) or fathering numerous out of wedlock children (Shawn Kemp, my High School's great achievement).

there were only several hundred kids in my highschool

I actually think that American religious values causes sex to be abused by pushing it underground and making it sinful. I think a lot less pregnancies and such would happen if it was more acceptable for teens to have sex. And if the teens were better educated on the subject of sexuality. I think sex is a great thing and we, as animals, should embrace nature's gifts. It's like eating, we want to do it and there's no reason people should feel ashamed to. Especially teens who are ready to go.
I think lots of US children a disciplined enough and that its more pushing sex underground which causes problems.


Also in regards to the Columbine thing that was nothing more than common as dirt public hysteria over "the Trench Coat Mafia". The kids didn't even where trench coats while gunning people down(they wore white shirts) also it was never mentioned how other kids would chase them around with cars......guess they forgot that little detail. Anyways the rate of school violence had gone down that year according to FBI reports.There are also more cases of violence at LA ghetto schools than in Columbine but for some reason those don't make major headlines. Interesting.

BTW I don't believe in most of the crap these conservatives are spilling. Less teenagers are having intercourse. True oral sex has increased dramatically. But this is a good thing . Well not really, it can still spread disease.

As for drug and alcohol use. Drug use has remained fairly constant considering the increase in population. Alcohol use is up though.

Statistics on cocaine use just posted today in on of our newspapers.

Amsterdam: 1 in 10 have used cocaine
Rotterdam: 1 in 20 have used cocaine (it said the % was half that of Amsterdam)
San Fransisco: 4 in 10 have used cocaine
Holland, average: 1 in 32 have used cocaine (up from 1 in 40 back in 1992)

The article was about drug (ab)use in Amsterdam, where cocaine is slowly replacing xtc as the main party drug. Though it also said the % of people using it was far less than in SF (4 in 10).

how many 14 year olds have STD's? not many. And I would prefer legal age of course. Going to jail doesn't suit my lifestyle much.

Let's put it this way.

I don't believe any of those stats. It's a bunch of bullshit.

Like I said in my post above, the most recent stats I seen showed teenage intercourse dropping. but what is happening is teenage girls (and boys) turn to oral sex as an alternative. Granted disease can be spread this way. But disease is not that rampant among teenagers. Most teenage sex occurs in a well defined group without many outsiders.

The same goes with teenage drug use. The latest stats I seen show use of hard drugs decreasing despite the increase in population. the only thing remaining constant was marijuana use. And because of the relatively new drug exctasy, the use of that drug has increased. It should level off.

I get tired of these alarmist things that say teenagers are a bunch of drug using sex addicts. They are still much better than teenagers of the late 60's.

it depends on where you are at

my hometown and the surrounding area is pretty bad (and as I described)

STDs are rampant there and even at 14 (probably would have to go to 12 or 13 to decrease chance of STDs to not likely)

my college is allright (some of all types)

I think it is more of a spotty thing, but some pklaces where you least expect it can be horrible

I live in a city where there a millions of things to do. Of course teenagers still complain about nothing to do. Granted you have to be 21 to do most things where I live. But who doesn't have a fake ID nowdays .

I wouldn't be surprised if sexual activity rates were slightly higher in small towns. They see the animals doing it etc. Similar with low socio economic areas, teenage single mothers, general social decay, crime, drugs etc.

But I really think teenagers exagerate. Adults are no different but they exagerate or minmise about different things - earnings, alcohol use etc.

We all in denial folks.
