I don't think it's so arcane. It's a wonderful example of the way things really were in the Middle Ages. It's like something out of Shakespeare; in fact I am certain that the bard must not have been aware of this episode, because it is just the sort of thing he would have jumped on.

about the little incident with the catalans: every large empire had small no-man's lands» from time to time. Byzantium was no exception. Attica was a region of no particular importance for Byzantium. Still good job by the catalans I don't try to diminuish their achievements

Stll what's important for potency is the time span of empires. And Byzantium was the empire with the longest time span in Europe ever. roman empire crumbled to the ground while Byzantium still stant tall and geve it the middle finger. (really it outlasted the western roman empire by a looong time )

It was the first and the best and the longest. (kind of like me reproductive organ).

And there's no luck anyone suprassing it now (Byzantium that is). I only hope that the EU does.

most people in northern european countries felt insulted when the journalist asked them why there are no minorities in the boeardrooms of companies.

the typical answer from northern europeans was : "what a racist question to ask!"
