Actually, that's an excellent comparison. The Oscars overwhelmingly go to established, mainstream, pedantic films, directors, and actors. The Olympics, likewise, are judged by a select, conservative (not politically) group of people, who are not known for their love of experiemtnal, innovative, ground breaking work.

Okay, they probably are, but I was trying to get at a differnt point, which is they tend to be bound to tradition, hate new stuff, etc. That's not necessarily a trait of political conservatism.
BTW, remember, the Candadians lost by more than one point, so even if the French judge had voted different, the Canadians still would have lost.
Remember, skating judging is extremely subjective. Also remember, where the Russians killed the Canadians was in artistic. They lost to them in technical, but aparently that wasn't enough.

Ermmm...Che, I think I figured out why everyone seems to be disagreeing with you. Did you see the same performances?
The vote was 5-4 in favor of Russia getting gold. How, some quick math will show you that if the French judge was proven to be biased, then it's 5-4 in favor of Canada instead.
Also, the part that everyone's disagreeing with is the TECHNICAL score. ARTISTIC score is measured by PRESENTATION.
How the hell could some judges (France, Russia, etc) give the same technical marks out?
You use the 'speed' argument, but last time I checked there are no radar guns measuring speed.
It goes by "tricks"(bad word but it's late) attempted and how well they were executed. From what I saw, there was no additional tricks the Ruskies did that the Canucks didn't, but the Canadians did so without any errors while the Russians had a few. So how'd some judges give them the same marks?

Update Live from Salt Lake:
Both pairs get a gold medal. French judge suspended because of strong evidence of vote-rigging.

if there is strong evidence against the french judge, then they must have evidence against the other judges too right? and will they then reexamine all the scours for all the pairs?

File this one under "cover our asses, and let's get the hell out of here."
The whole so-called "sport" is fundamentally flawed. It's like it's a bullet-riddled assault victim, and they just slapped a band-aid on the gaping wound in the guy's tuckus. No way they're going to bother going after the guy with the gun.

I don't really understand the fuss. The scores were extremely close. Both couples deserve recognition for doing well and they both got that. A silver medal at the Olympics is nothing to be ashamed of. Besides, it should be taking part which is important - not winning. (Remember the Jamaican bob-sleigh team?)
I also fail to understand why you lot think you know more about ice-skating than the judges do. Don't you think it takes a lot of extertise to know how difficult certain manouvers are and judge how well they were performed?
Give it a rest for goodness sake!
