Yeah, I agree that we've missed some great classics, two obvious ones not mentioned yet are North by Northwest and Psycho. Or how about Shane. Or the original All Quiet on the Western Front. Then there are the Bogart films: The Maltese Falcon and The Caine Mutiny. And how can we forget the early 70s film Young Frankstein and Blazing Saddles, and Mel's first Oscar, The Producers (Spingtime for Hitler and Germany, Winter for Poland and France).

Come on folks, lets name some great films that have not been mentioned yet.

I considered all three of those Mel Brooks films, but I just couldn't bump off my #1 comedy, Life of Brian. But The Producers sure made it close.

Wait a minute! We can assign points? In that case, DM, I'd like to change my vote to:

Casablanca - 3 points
Brazil - 3 points
Goodfellas - 2 points
Annie Hall - 2 points

If that's more trouble than it's worth, DM, then ignore this.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

kaak: good idea. reismark: no, not the best. it just got the most nominations at the beggining. I posted them because darkcloud requested i post the tally. ok guys, we're going to the next level, and if you have a bone to pic about what movie ends up in what category, fight with movie.com.
THe way it works is you have a certain number of votes per category (depending on the number of entries). You can divide them up however you wish within the category, however, there will be no bringing over points from one category to another (votes are in parenthesis. ex: Pick Top 3). I'll tally the movies by seeing which have the most votes at the end and putting them in order. we MAY have to have run offs. i'll keep you posted.

Few suggestions...

You might want to make an entirely new thread now that nominees have been finalized, and categories have been set.

Also, a few of your classifications are off. For instance, Brazil was made in the 80s, not in the first half of the century. I'd also consider Dr. Strangelove a comedy as opposed to a scifi... indeed, I'm not sure there is anything scifi about it.

With that said, here are my choices from among those listed (!), in order.

ACTION
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Fugitive
3. Die Hard

COMEDY
1. Monty Python's Life of Brian
2. Raising Arizona
3. Airplane!
4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
5. Bull Durham
6. The Princess Bride
7. Brazil (This would be bumped off my list if Dr. Stangelove is classified here; Dr. S. would be #5)

CRIME
1. The Godfather, Part II
2. L.A. Confidential
3. The Godfather

DRAMA
1. Hamlet
2. American Beauty
3. Fight Club
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Life Is Beautiful

FANTASY
1. Excalibur
2. Lord of the Rings
3. Willow

HISTORY
1. Schindler's List
2. Braveheart

HORROR
1. Alien

MUSICAL
I humbly abstain from voting.

SCI-FI
1. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
2. Dr. Stangelove (a comedy that would go at #5 on my list)
3. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
4. 12 Monkeys (assuming Dr. Strangelove is moved to comedy)

THRILLER
1. The Silence of the Lambs
2. The Sixth Sense

WAR
1. Bridge on the River Kwai
2. Saving Private Ryan

WESTERN
1. Tombstone

1900-1950
I humbly abstain from voting.

1950s
1. Bridge on the River Kwai

1960s
1. Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
I humbly abstain from voting for a second nominee. (Where the hell is The Graduate?!?!)

1970s
1. Monty Python's Life of Brian
2. The Godfather, Part II

1980s
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Raising Arizona
3. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
4. Airplane!
5. The Princess Bride

EARLY 1990s
1. The Silence of the Lambs
2. Schindler's List
3. Braveheart
4. The Usual Suspects
5. The Shawshank Redemption

LATE 1990s
1. Hamlet
2. L.A. Confidential
3. American Beauty
4. The Sixth Sense
5. Saving Private Ryan

NEW MILLENNIUM
1. Memento
2. Gladiator
3. Shrek

APOLYTON CHOICE
1. Monty Python's Life of Brian
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
3. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
4. The Godfather
5. Braveheart

Put an end to popups!

Guynemer: on many there wasn't a specification on which brazil people were talking about. there was one made in 1944..the original. Also, go argue with movie.com about the classification of Dr. Strangelove.

Jon Miller: the lists were made from all the nominations that made the original nomination list cut. Bond nor pink panther was uttered before the cut off.

Come on folks, lets name some great films that have not been mentioned yet.

why didn't you pu these in DM

OK: i'm moving everything to the new thread. don't post here!
miller: i stopped looking at anything new after my nomination cut off time (which i extended two hours beyond what i said i would).
i've explained this a hundred times over...if i didn't make limits i'd spend forever retracing things and it would be so sloppy. at it is, i'm spending ALOT of time on this. thanks though. I'm sorry certain movies weren't included....but that's the way the ball bounces in lieu of time restrictions.
