Got spare money?

The film experts and whatever are out of tune with reality - no way in HELL was A Beautiful Mind better than LOTR, no way was Halle Berry better than Sissy Spacek, and absolutely no way Ian McKlellan should have lost for best supporting actor.

And Beautiful Mind is one of them.

The LOTR geeks are upset because they think that every award should have been given to their movie .

Really? Beautiful Mind was good, I suppose, but Gosford Park was awful, and the only redeeming quality of Moulin Rouge was Nicole Kidman

I would have liked A Beautiful Mind had it actually been accurate.

People should look up what John Nash was really like, particularly about his bisexuality and his runins with the law.

I liked LOTR. It's a fun flick to see. Beautiful Mind is just one of the artsy movies everyone clobbers over at these award shows.

Let me quote from Reismarks thread, where most everyone who has so far participated in this thread so enthusiastically disagreed with me:

"I'm sorry, but I gotta go against the 'poly crowd on this one. Let me put in in bold so my message shall be heard: There is no way that LoTR is going to win this... no way. Emotionally uninvolving crowd pleasers never win B Picture, even if they do make a lot of money and have a huge influence on the biz (Star Wars, anyone?) OTOH, emotionally manipulative films (Titanic, English Patient), especially those that deal with "diseases" (Rainman, Terms of Endearment) tend to win. Advantage: Beautiful Mind. "

Titanic would not rate as cool and entertaining, except of course the scene where the dude bounces off the propeller

Even though I'm a big fan of LOTR, I thought A Beautiful Mind was a better movie. However, I thought Peter Jackson should have won for director. Of course, it's tough to split the two, so both go to A Beautiful Mind.

He's only ever denied being homosexual (duh, the man's married).

He was arrested in a public restroom for some "lewd" behavior many years ago...

One thing I hate about the academy award is the "we have to give so and so something" syndrome. Honouring Warren Beatty for example.

I agree with John that David is just mad his film doesn't win.

A film being entertaining has nothing to do with whether it is the Best Picture or not. Star Wars was entertaining, but it isn't even close to being a Best Picture. It's basically a cliched mythic epic that was very fun. Doesn't mean it was good filmmaking (and it really wasn't).

Star Wars is entertaining?

Star Wars is the worst 9 movies ever made.

George Lucas' best movie was American Graffiti. How sad is that?

His bisexual tendencies were noted in the book, as were his anti-semitic beliefs, among other things that never made it into the film. Funny thing was, no one--critics, publicists, etc.--never made any mention of the differences.

Matt Drudge blew the lid off that one last week--or was it two weeks ago? In any case, the 'Beautiful Mind' folks had a beautiful fit, saying that Drudge had gone 'too far' and was trying to sabotage their Oscar chances. There was also talk of 'lawsuits for libel'--by whom, and for what, I have no clue.

I have never understood why anyone could possibly like it.

And Phanton Menace especially.
When I saw that, my first thought was "You know what? Toy Story: Phanton Menace would have been a far more entertaining movie."

My God! A film not including everything from a book? Stop the Presses!!

I wonder if that means I should be mad at every movie made that was based on a Tom Clancy book (where many main things are omitted) .

And that folks is why Hollywood films are hardly ever great - they air brush out anything they think won't be popular. Its a lowest common denominator form of entertainment.

This isn't some fictional book like Tom Clancy.

It was a biography. The film was an adaptation of the biography and left out some of the most critical parts.

John Nash's 8 page paper on the future of computing from the 60s is more entertaining than A Beautiful Mind was. I bet it'd make for a better movie too.
