Marijuana has been reported to be effective in:
a) reducing intraocular pressure in glaucoma
b) reducing nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy
c) stimulating the appetite for patients living with AIDS
d) controlling spasticity associated with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis
e) decreasing the suffering from chronic pain
f) controlling seizures associated with seizure disorders

Except for glaucoma, the jury's still out. Early studies and anecdotal reports which established anti-nausea and analgesic properties have since been refuted. There's also problems establishing precise dosage and necessary THC to gauge therapeutic potential. OTOH, marijuana has been linked to increased risk of heart attack in high-risk users, and has been implicated in increasing risk of panic attack and psychosis in those already susceptible as well as some users that aren't. It's a drug like every other, and not as "harmless" as one would think.

It should not be legalized because then the big corporations would move in and out compete the small, rural grower.

Marijuana legalization would seriously damage the 'off-season' economy in many small rural areas in Canada.

Do you think a family business would ever be able to compete with the volume, branding, and financial muscle of a corporate big boy?

No!

We need to keep marijuana illegal in order to preserve an important part of the rural Canadian economy.

I probably would not be attending this university if not for the 'artificially' high price of marijuana.

'Reported to be effective' and 'proven' are two different things, however. Still, I was already aware of the glaucoma and chemotherapy uses.

The anti-nausea and anti-wasting effects are proven to the extent that the FDA approved a drug called Marinol, which is made from marijuana but lacks its intoxicating effects.

The only reason marijuana is outlawed in the US is because a Congressman from Texas in the 1920's introduced a bill to curb the rising illegal immigration from Mexico. Since a lot of Mexicans were using and growing marijuana, the bill made marijuana illegal. Good plan guys, we only have 5 million illegal immigrants in the US today .

Unfortunately, many government people believe their own anti-marijuana propaganda. Many people in the 1960's thought that once they got into government that pot would be legal. Bill Clinton was the first hippie generation pot smoker in office and he did nothing. Face it, conservatives in America can prevent any radical bill. That's why pot won't be legal.

But it should... I'm not going to go into the reasons, everyone else has done a good enough job of that.

That's what I'm saying. You ask what's the fun in smoking none "buzzing" pot for medical reasons. I answer; the fun part is that it prevents nausea, thus not throwing up. But I agree that not having a "buzz" on top of that is kind of a downer.

In Switzerland it's becoming totally legal to smoke weed,... There remain only the french part of the country where its "theorically" illegal,...
Now the government has the possibility to tax it, which means extra money for the social. The prices have gone down : ~CHF 20 ($7) for 3 gr of a good indoor. It can be controlled, per example, now it will be harder for a 12 years old kid to buy weed. And the police is not wasting his time with these things,...

Wrong. The latest Physician's Desk Reference lists all the psychoactive side effects from smoking are also present in the pill form, Marinol. Furthermore, the Reference lists potential adverse effects when used with other psychoactive drugs. It also highly discourages administration to patients with hypo- and hypertension because of side effects such as tachycardia and palpitations. Administration to pediatric and geriatric patients is also STRONGLY discouraged.

Smoking is another problem in immunocompromised patients due to the invasive presence of molds and fungi such as aspergillosis. The elimination of marijuana, and tobacco, from these patients' environment is recommended.

Like I said, the jury's still out. To quote one researcher from the New England Journal. - ' The anomalies observed clinically when THC is present in the cell membrane (i.e. impaired brain, immune, cardiovascular, and reproductive functions) are associated with the molecular disruption of membrane signalling. Because of the disruption of this molecular mechanism by THC, it has not been possible to separate the adverse effects of THC and marijuana from their therapeutic properties' *

Right.

That's why I took care to point out is was a 1995 paper, and that 'reported to be effective' was not the same as 'proven'.

FWIW, I have never understood the use of any drugs, including alcohol. Even during my 'experimental' phase as a teenager, my reaction was: Why the F*** would anyone do this to themselves?!

(Now watch me get flamed! )

No problem. I was just responding to Sikander's post directly.

The "medicinal" properties of cannabis are always cited by activists in almost knee-jerk fashion. Working in a medical research profession, I know a little better. Cannabis and other recreational drugs have a long way to go in terms of establishing any and all beneficial and adverse effects.
